MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - U.S. Marshals have arrested a
20-year-old Montgomery man accused of torturing his mother's pit
bull when she wouldn't let him use the family car.
Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall said Juan Daniels was
taken into custody today in Tuscaloosa and will be returned to
Montgomery to face felony animal cruelty charges.
Daniels is accused of tying the dog to a post, beating it with a
shovel, soaking it with lighter fluid and setting the canine on
fire September 7th. The dog, burned over 60 percent of its body,
survived and drew widespread concern and help with vet bills after
photos of it were posted on the Internet.
Workers at the Montgomery Humane Society shelter nicknamed the
dog "Louis Vuitton" in recognition of a Mobile dog nicknamed
"Gucci" after it survived being set afire in 1994. The Mobile
case led to passage of Alabama's "Gucci Law," which made it a
felony to torture a dog or cat.
Humane Society workers said Louis Vitton appears in good spirits
despite pain and wags his tail for visitors.
Under Alabama law, an animal cruelty charge carries a sentence
of one to 10 years in prison if convicted.

I wish we did have a task force that involved law enforcement, not just minimally trained cruelty investigators that run around with a stick and a badge. I also wish we had tougher prosecution, conviction and laws. I think 1-10 years is ridiculous-he burned an animal. If this had been a person, which it very well might be the next time, his sentence would be stiffer. And there usually is a next time until it escalates to the type of violence that is carried for days on national news-like Columbine. Then everyone asks, well what happened? The signs are usually there, they need to be read and followed up on immediately!

Should be an eye for an eye.  Too bad we can’t have a bonfire and use the person who burned this dog as starter knot.  Look at our headlines.  Look at the top stories in this area - for crying out loud have all the insane people escaped and now they’re out killing and torturing animals?  Do we not have some special task force in this state that goes after these kinds of people?  They need to be locked up.  What happens when they move on to other things besides animals?  They shoot up schools and post offices.

And guess what else?  The story about Mr. Wilson the business owner that lives in Spanish Fort - thank goodness they caught the guy that did it.  Mr. Wilson is a wonderful man and vital part of the community.  Drive down Stage Coach Rd. where this Buzbee lives and see how many starving dogs and pit bulls are chained to trees.  There is a serious link between animal abuse, neglect and other crimes.  The place that guy lives is proof.

We should all be so proud to know that we are number 1 in the state for animal abuse cases.  What a total shame.

This evil person should share a cell with Michael Vick.

Although vandalism may represent costly and psychologically significant destructiveness,  smashed windshields and graffitied walls do not feel pain or cry out when they are damaged. Animals, however, do express their distress when they have been abused, and their distress calls out for attention.  Addressing cruelty to animals as a significant form of aggressive and antisocial behavior may add one more piece to the puzzle of understanding and preventing youth violence.  Cruelty to animals is all too often a part of the landscape of violence in which youth participate and to which they are exposed. The number of animals that are victims of such abuse is, at present, difficult to estimate, as is the number of young people who perpetrate such abuse.  Parents, childcare providers, teachers, others who play caregiving roles for children (e.g., clergy, coaches), and young people themselves should be informed that animal abuse may be a significant sign of a tendency to violence and psychological disturbance and should not be ignored.

Until our society and law enforcement officials take a more aggressive stand in the matter of animal abuse, neglect and premeditated “blood sports” like dog fighting, we are going to hold onto the #1 spot.  Many people act as though concern for animal welfare is something to be ashamed of.  We should be more ashamed that we are tolerant of it and allow it to continue and allow the abusers to get off with fines and minimal reprimand.  Crimes of this nature deserve prison sentencing followed up by intensive psychotherapy.

There are multiple confirmed cases that link animal cruelty to later violent crimes. Look at Pet-Abuse.com. Not only are the numbers of abuse cases in Alabama overwhelming, but the numbers in Mobile County are greatly disturbing. We have the #1 spot in Alabama.

But of course - dog torture is acceptable to some people.  It’s only an animal.  That mentality is what drives violent individuals to commit criminal acts -  the V.T.U. killings - Columbine High - there is a proven, direct link between animal cruelty and violent human interactions.  I hope the person that tortured this dog gets the maximum sentence in prison, then serves time performing community service jobs to raise money to donate to animal humane agencies.

Thank goodness this nut was caught. I hope he convicted for the max. Next time it could be person.
