The National Humane Society has gotten involved in a dog abuse case in Alabama. A $2,500 reward is being offered to help find the person who shot a dog several times. That dog was found in a dumpster in Brewton in Escambia County. She was given the name "Dee-Dee" before she had to be put down because of her injuries

Dee-Dee was shot in the neck, front shoulder and front leg before being tossed as trash. Escambia County Humane Officer Jimmy Jones says she had a shattered backbone too. "It looked like it was hit with something instead of by a vehicle." The abuse made local headlines in Brewton.

Rickey Robinson saw that face in the paper and was sure it was his missing dog. "I was crying coming up that road until I got here. Then, I saw it was a female. I never even read the article. I just saw the picture." It turned out to be a false alarm for Rickey but he's still disgusted by the abuse.

According to workers at the Dollar General store, the manager was throwing trash in the dumpster and saw a little movement. He looked inside and saw Dee-Dee wrapped in a blanket. She was staring up at him.

Jimmy was hopeful at first; Dee-Dee looked like she might make it. "As alert as she was and as responsive as she was, we thought she stood a good chance until after the x-rays and more thorough vet check." He says don’t be fooled by the blanket, it wasn't for comfort. "It was probably wrapped in there to try and conceal it in hopes it would die before somebody noticed it."

The name Dee-Dee was short for Dumpster Dog. Now, the hunt is on for the name of who did this.

Brewton authorities say this is not the first dog shooting they've seen lately. In that past 3 months, 3 dogs have been shot and no one is sure why.

In the state of Alabama, a $2500 reward is offered for information regarding the abuse and torture of a domestic animal.  In the state of Florida, up to $10,000 in fines may be imposed for the murder of a possum.  Wake up Alabama.  We need tougher cruelty laws and greater public awareness.

If the media didn’t keep reporting these awful crimes, I doubt anything would ever be done about the animal abuse.  Most people in our community do not care about the rights of poor helpless animals.  Just look at the WALA site.  Just yesterday somebody ran over a poor dog in Eight Mile because “he felt like it.” What is wrong with people?  That was somebody’s pet.  What if it had been a child?  Or a blind person?  They’re in your way so you just run over them?  These are criminal acts and I am so glad to see that the media and these reporters are so persistent with their reports.  It’s a widespread epidemic and something needs to be done.

With all of the recent abuse cases, you have to wonder are these copy cat cases, has abuse and cruelty become more widespread or has the media simply decided to take an active stance on the subject of animal cruelty?  Hey - if it sells more newspapers or more t.v. commercials - I don’t care.  The more attention that these cruelty cases get, the sooner the perpetrators will be brought to justice and these crimes will be minimal.  But then again, we don’t live in a perfect world do we?  If you know of an abuse case, please contact local law enforcement and cruelty agencies.  Animal cruelty and abuse is a sign of deep psychological problems that lead to later violent and criminal outburst, frequently directed towards other human beings.  Take action and report the abuse.

Those of you who are torturing and killing all these animals - take a minute - stop - look into their big, pleading eyes.  You are evil and criminal and you should be punished.

Here’s a starting point for rr2j the person that wants someone to come shoot dogs in his or her neighborhood.  Instead of vigilante killings, why not be a level-headed citizen and call the authorities.  If you live in Brewton, call this number and go through the appropriate channels.

rr2j should be put in a dumpster.  How cruel.  There are more appropriate ways to manage neglected animals.  If a child was orphaned and abandoned and digging through a trash can for food, what’s your solution rr2j?  Shoot the child.  Ignorant, sad, narrow-minded beliefs you have.  Why not just contact the local animal agency and deal with it a humane way.  And hopefully not too many private citizens roam the streets with guns looking for living things to shoot.  We might as well live in some third world country.  Go and get your telephone book and look up whatever animal agency is active in your area and make the call about the dogs that are supposedly “terrorizing” you.

rr2j,

If you would care to share what neighborhood you live in and where these reported dogs are, I will be glad to come by and see what help I can be. I will not shoot the dogs, but I will try to find them loving homes.

There are more compassionate ways to handle a dog that “terrorizes” your neighborhood. Looking at this poor dog, I seriously doubt it ever terrorized anyone, but even if it was a “vicious” dog, it could have been picked up by the humane society. According to the report, the dog did not try to attack, even when critically injured, so my guess would be that it would have made a loving family a good pet.

Shame on you.  If dogs are “terrorizing” your community, then contact the local SPCA.  If owners were more responsible to begin with, then animals would not be allowed to “terrorize” anyone.  Animals would be spayed, neutered and cared for.  You need to get some counseling rr2J.  If you have time to post on this forum, you have time to pick up the telephone and contact the local humane society about dogs terrorizing your neighborhood.  Better still, just report the “terror” here.  You can do it anonymously and those of us that care about animal welfare will take it from there.

Maybe this person could come to my neighborhood there are plenty of these Dogs terrorizing the community !
