Dr. L. Scott Quackenbush, the Executive Director of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 56 years old.Dr. Quackenbush took over the Sea Lab in July. He was previously Associate Dean for Marine Science Programs and Marine Lab Director at Humbolt State University in Arcata, California.
"We are shocked and saddened by Dr. Quackenbush's death," said USA President Gordon Moulton, Chair of the Sea Lab's Executive Committee. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sorrowful time."
Dr. Quackenbush is survived by his wife, Dr. Teri Butler, a science teacher at Theodore High School, and children Ben, 20; Seth, 18; and Hannah, 15.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Dauphin Island United Methodist Church.
