"You can't catch any fish in there anymore except trash fish," says Smith. "There's no redfish, no flounder."
The lagoon has been cut off from the Gulf of Mexico by a huge sand deposit in the pass near the jetty. Smith, a longtime Gulf Shores resident and environmentalist, says Little Lagoon needs the flowing and nuturing waters of the Gulf to survive."
"When I saw it, I knew it was a dead lagoon. Anytime you don't have waterflow in a lagoon the estuary is dead."
The Alabama Department of Transportation maintains the pass. Officials say exacavators will dig out a deep trench connecting the lagoon to the Gulf by Monday. A dredging crew was at the pass Thursday clearing away sand deposits into the jetty by rough surf.

the tell of the tangled web starts after hurricane fredrick
when the “east pass” opened after said hurricane and mant.was adopted on east pass the “west pass” was left with out the flow needed
to keep it open naturaly hurricane ivan opened west pass man closed it
“katrina"re opened west pass but without water flow????
sense “fredrick” man has built “the condos” on the natural protection of the beach “The DUNES"sense"fredrick" locals have seen beaches disapering/renurished/passes closed by sand and this touch the efects of dreging in(mobile ship channel) on the islands west of it"sand, pelican, dolphin"the humanrace had better tighenup making money at the expense of nature.
