Former Mobile County School board member David Thomas can have his job at Bishop State Community College. An arbitrator in Florida said Thomas was wrongfully fired from the two year college.
Thomas was the director of the Southwest Campus.
After he was convicted of leaving the scene of a hit and run accident and was impeached from the school board, the two year college system let him go.
The arbitrator said Thomas can have his job back at Bishop State, but as an instructor.
Chancellor Bbradley Byrne says that's just not going to happen.
"We will ask the court for the stay of the order and if that stay is granted, no he will not be allowed to come on campus," said Alabama Two Year College System Chancellor Bradley Byrne.
"The arbitrator decided first of all that the felony conviction did not affect his ability to do his job and he continued to do his job in more than acceptable manner in spite of the felony conviction," said David Thomas' attorney Cecil Gardner.
The arbitrator also ordered that Thomas receive back pay all the way to the date of his termination.
The two year college system hopes to have the stay from the court in hand on Monday.

This is totally crazy. Does this mean that if a convicted sex offender is able to mop floors, sweep halls and clean tioilets, it is O.K. for him to work in the school system ? If he can do his job, he can work in the system. Give me a break.

This is ridiculous!

There are laws that will come into play that are much greater than the by-laws of some two year college. This guy has a deplorable history and he is still working the system.

He should have cut his loses when he could, because this is going to cause a public outcry he will regret.

How can a convicted felon work in the school system! If David Thomas is reinstated, everyone who has been turned away because of a felony conviction somewhere in their past should file a class action law suit. Stupidity follows stupidity with this man. He should be ashamed to even think about showing his face in any school in any state. I wouldn’t want him teaching my grandchildren the time of day.
