MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama House committee plans to vote
Thursday on 10 bills aimed at controlling illegal immigration in
Alabama.
Members of the House Judiciary Committee listened for a couple
of hours Wednesday to arguments for and against the immigration
bills.
The legislation includes a bill to prohibit the state from
offering incentives to new companies coming into Alabama if they
employ illegal immigrants. Another bill would require proof of
legal residency before a person could receive public benefits.
The committee chairman, Democratic Rep. Marcel Black of
Tuscumbia, said the committee would meet at 9 a.m. Thursday and
vote on each bill.
