"The thieves went in the man's backyard and stole two-thousand pounds of copper wiring," says Escambia County Florida Sheriff's Office spokesman Glenn Austin. "The thieves saw it as an opportunity to take whatever they can and they did."
The theft happened sometime Sunday at a house on Gibson Road near Highway 29. Investigators believe whoever stole the copper could be headed to a local scrap yard or recycling center. The copper is worth between two-thousand and six-thousand dollars.
"Normally they get the copper out of air-conditioning units from behind businesses or homes and it's usually about a pound of copper," says Austin. "But this is two-thousand pounds of copper and we think they're hoping to fence it real quick and make a quick dollar."
The victim set up security cameras in his backyard but the thieves stole them too. One camera wasn't taken...deputies think the copper thieves could be caught on camera.
