COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Democrats don't take
Stephen Colbert seriously enough to put him on the
presidential ballot.
Hours after the comedian officially filed as a Democratic
candidate, party officials turned him down. The 13-3 executive
council vote came after about 40 minutes of discussion by top party
officials.
One council member accused the host of "The Colbert Report" of
seeing the state's Democrats as -- quote -- "suckers" he can use
in his comedy routine. He added that Colbert would only detract
from the serious candidates on the presidential ballot.
The Comedy Central host's campaign paid a $2,500 filing fee just
before today's noon deadline. Democrats say he'll get his money
back.
