MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Some universities in Alabama use anexception to the federal student privacy law to notify parents when
students show signs of trouble with drinking or drugs.
The federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects
the privacy of student education records. But it allows colleges to
notify parents of student drug or alcohol violations at a time when
they became rampant.
A survey by the New York Times Regional Newspapers found that
the University of Alabama, the University of North Alabama and
Jacksonville State University notify parents of alcohol or drug
policy or legal violations by their underage students.
Auburn University do not notify parents if their child runs
afoul of campus or civilian laws or policies. Auburn's senior
program adviser, Jim Hardin, says being a tattletale to parents
might affect the trust that students have with the administration.
The University of West Alabama also does not notify parents, but
it's considering changing that policy.
