PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - Federal officials say cleaning pollutants
from a 65-year-old Pensacola lumber treating plant will cost about
$15 million and take 20 years.
Escambia Treating Company closed 25 years ago, but creosote and
other chemicals used at the plant to treat utility poles leaked
into groundwater for decades.
U.S. Senator Bill Nelson met with Pensacola-area residents
Monday to discuss the Environmental Protection Agency's plan to
clean the site. The government has relocated about 400 homeowners
from areas surrounding the closed plant.
