MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama pilot who died on a mission 40
years ago has been honored in a ceremony at Battleship Memorial
Park in Mobile.
It was only last year that details of Jack Weeks' mission became
known when a CIA report was declassified. It disclosed that Weeks
had been flying on CIA spying missions. On one 1968 mission over
North Korean, he located the seized ship USS Pueblo.
His wife, Sharlene Weeks of Haverhill, Mass., said she had not
known of her husband's CIA spy work. She was on hand when the
Birmingham native was honored Wednesday. Three of their four
children and one of their nine grandchildren also attended the park
ceremony.
Weeks was killed 40 years ago while flying an A-12 Blackbird spy
aircraft out of Okinawa, Japan.
A commendation signed by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley honoring Weeks
as "a great American" was read to the audience of some 125 people
from across the nation by Battleship Commission Chairman Barney
Gass.
