TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The family of a 15-year-old girl whosays she was molested by a priest is suing him and the Diocese of
Pensacola-Tallahassee.
The family claims the church has continued to persecute them
over the case.
Father Vijay Vhaskr Godugunuru, was serving as a visiting priest
at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Bonifay, in the Panhandle,
when the girl says he sexually abused her in 2006.
Godugunuru pleaded no contest to aggravated assault. As a
condition of the plea deal, he had to return to India. His attorney
could not be immediately reached for comment.
The girl and her family are also suing the Diocese overseeing
their church and its bishop. They claim the Diocese placed the
priest in a position that would allow him to abuse the girl.
Diocese spokeswoman Peggy DeKeyser says church officials haven't
received the lawsuit and couldn't comment on the litigation.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. It was filed in Circuit
Court in Leon County.
