A Foley mother and firefighter has been charged with reckless endangerment, after police say she left her three-month old baby in her while she went shopping at Wal-Mart. Wendy Martell was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center Sunday afternoon. Police were called to the Highway 59 store Sunday when another shopper saw the crying baby in the back seat of Martell's car.

"When we interviewed her, she told us she forgot the child was in the back seat," says Foley Police Sgt. Tony Fuqua.

Temperatures were in the 70's Sunday afternoon across much of Southwest Alabama. Firefigthers say when they got the child out of the car, the temperature inside was over 90 degrees. The baby was rushed to the hospital and Martell was put in jail.

"It was the smartest thing to do," says Fuqua. "All parents should make their children a main priority. This woman could face up to a year in prison if she's convicted of reckless endangerement."

"How could she do that?" asks Miriam Wallace. "I don't even want to imagine what the child went through."

"I think it's ridiculous," says Shannon Crane, a Foley resident. "It's just sad, it's a helpless baby, it can't defend itself."

Foley Fire Chief Jamie Hinton has placed Martell on administrative leave. Hinton says Martell has been with the department for two years. The Department of Human Resources has been notified about the incident. The baby was released from the hospital Tuesday.

All of you people should be very carful how you judge Wendy, because that is the measure of judgment you will face on the final day,Wendy and Steve are both very loving parents and i know this for myself, real people make mistakes thats all this was. Take a long look in the mirror, and make sure you are in a place in your life where you can look down on someone and be there judge.

You don’t have to be PERFECT to not LOCK YOUR 3-MONTH OLD CHILD IN THE CAR IN THE WALMART PARKING LOT! Keep babbling on with your scripture-quoting self. It’s making you look dumber by the post. Perhaps someone should lock you in a trunk for awhile. I hear there’s a trucker from Missouri that’s missing his woman. Sounds like you would make a perfect replacement.

To “the judge”:

She didn’t forget a THING, she forgot HER 3-MONTH OLD CHILD in a HOT CAR in the WALMART PARKING LOT! Too bad your mother didn’t remember her pill (or at least a wire hanger) and corrupted the world with you. Take your own advice and use your brain first, before your mouth.

To “WilfordLee”:

Turn off Judge Judy, pick up the TV and rapidly (and repetitively) put your head through the glass. You have no common, or uncommon, sense. Beating your head through the TV can’t do anything but help matters.

I hope you are the VERY first one in the line to be fixed so you will not have Children EVER.I hate to know there’s Parents( Or soon to be a parent0 That would teach their child there’s no mistakes to be made on their part. It’s PARENTS as yourself that make the world a sad place to live.Maybe you should spend less time posting things about someone you don’t know, Nor the FULL events that took place on Sunday and More time reading the Bible On JUDGE NOT. But hey no need to feel bad about this, you have companions to help you SPEW more hate for people you dont even know.
Oh and for your little comment about how many times has she done this and not been caught, Well I ask you this, How manytimes have you allowed YOUR children to do something that OTHERS would never dream of letting theirs do and YOU have never ended the ER because of the choice you made to allow them to do it..Lets hear it, Open YOUR closet for us all to see.

Instead of us sitting here beating ourselves up.
Why dont we all donate a Teddy Bear to your local Child Abuse Center, where the real abused children are. This is a great uni-sex toy, and may give them something to hold on too in their time of need............I’ll bet if you ask Pat Peterson he will find an adress for you.

Oh my god, I don�t believe what I�m reading.
Lets not forget she is only a {woman} & human being who is capable of forgetting things.
My lord it happens, Yee who has never forgotten anything please cast the first stone. Apparently
a bunch of your mommies forgot to take the PILL. Don�t tell me you have never forgotten anything. Don�t get me wrong I�m not saying what she did was right, and I thank God everything turned out alright. And she will have to answer to a court of her peers. But its not for us to Judge her HERE. Yaw leave seally34 alone she sounds like a little girl, How would you feel if this happened to your sister, ( it would hurt to hear all these people calling your sister stupid ). Wendy may you find it in your heart one day to forgive yourself. Martell family may God bless you and may you have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and too the rest of you Merry X-Mas. The world would be a lot better place if we learned to first use our brain before we use our mouth.

I think we are being a little tough on young Wendy. If we are honest with ourselves, we have all left loved ones in locked cars at least once in our lives, I know back in the 70�s(before we knew it was bad for your health) I would leave my three boys in our van while I went to work. But we are now in year 2007 and know better�so I think Wendy should be banded for life from all Walmart and Sam�s Clubs. That will teach her a bigger lesson than a month in jail. As for Seally34, you will be made to sit in the car, behind the driver�s side, for 45 minutes.
People have told me in the past that I have �an uncommon wisdom�, all I know is that I just say what Judge Judy would say if she had the time to hear every case. I�ve learned a lot from her over the years.

I fully agree with rabidpooh, you leave your kids in the car for 5 minutes to run into the gas station or 45 to run into walmart for anything and you are just stupid.
