A Foley mother and firefighter has been charged with reckless endangerment, after police say she left her three-month old baby in her while she went shopping at Wal-Mart. Wendy Martell was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center Sunday afternoon. Police were called to the Highway 59 store Sunday when another shopper saw the crying baby in the back seat of Martell's car.

"When we interviewed her, she told us she forgot the child was in the back seat," says Foley Police Sgt. Tony Fuqua.

Temperatures were in the 70's Sunday afternoon across much of Southwest Alabama. Firefigthers say when they got the child out of the car, the temperature inside was over 90 degrees. The baby was rushed to the hospital and Martell was put in jail.

"It was the smartest thing to do," says Fuqua. "All parents should make their children a main priority. This woman could face up to a year in prison if she's convicted of reckless endangerement."

"How could she do that?" asks Miriam Wallace. "I don't even want to imagine what the child went through."

"I think it's ridiculous," says Shannon Crane, a Foley resident. "It's just sad, it's a helpless baby, it can't defend itself."

Foley Fire Chief Jamie Hinton has placed Martell on administrative leave. Hinton says Martell has been with the department for two years. The Department of Human Resources has been notified about the incident. The baby was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Oh and herewasonlyoneperfectperson!, you want to know my life story.........I was born in Mobile.  Raised in Bay Minette.  Lived a normal life up until I reached High School.  When I turned 17, while in high school, I was rapped.  From then on I got to where I didn’t trust people and then met this wonderful man.  We got married, had two kids, and no I live my life the way God intended.  I thank him everyday for what I have in life.  I never ment to start nothing with my comment and now look where it’s gotten.  YOu asked and I gave you my life story.  I am a very kind person and I was never intending to do any harm at this website, I just wanted to know, why someone would leave a child in the car and what the difference between 45 minutes and 1 1/2 hours were.  The victims sister said it, and so I asked.

Hey herewasonlyoneperfectperson!  I am not saying that I am perfect, but I would never forget a child in a car.  I have never left my child in a car.  Even if I just have to run in the store for 3 seconds, I take them with me.  If my sis did something like this, I would have the same opinion that I do for this girl.  So I guess you would leave your child in the car.  Hmm....what a good mother you would be or are?!!!  And same for the judge.... no one is perfect, I’m not saying they are, but when it comes to a child, how can you forget about a child in the car with you.  And just maybe a bunch of these mommies on here, like me, didnt forget to take “the Pill”.  Have you ever heard of wanting to have kids?

to everyone on here who thinks they are preaching the gospel.  who cares what you think no one on here thinks they are perfect or even claimed to be.  you think he was perfect even he made mistakes and by the way dont care not my religion so you can talk all you want.  i have my opinion and you have yours however twisted it may be but some of us have reality in our eyes and now that you dont leave a 3 month old in the car and then try to blame someone else for it.  because really that is all this is about and you guys have nothing better to do than bash the people who have real comments then go right ahead.  at least we have lives and dont have 20 postings up in one day to talk about everybody else up here.  have fun to all of you.

Walmart should share the blame in this as well.  They make their stores so irresistible. I go every Wednesday afternoon, and I know that I can’t keep my mind off it until I get in there. I bet that’s what happed to young Wendy; she got her mind on those sales and just forgot the baby.  Sometimes I forget to eat breakfast Wednesday mornings cause I’m thinking about going.  Walmart should have their senior greeters walking around the cars looking for small children, baby, and forgotten pets.  I just think Walmart should do their part in this. Plus it would give a few more seniors jobs.

Last but not least.
Mr. Pat Peterson,
Maybe before you do a News report you should do some RESEARCH on what you are reporting 1st. Since you didn’t BOTHER to do this I’ll set the record straight for your Viewers.
1st Wendy was NOT Christmas shopping as you reported.
2nd. The baby DIDN’T stay in the hospital till Tuesday.
3RD. The Temp as I was told By someone that was THERE it was not over 90*.
4th. She DIDN’T spend 90 mins inside Wal-Mart.
See how YOUR reporting has placed this info in the eyes of YOUR viewers? They are on a witch hunt PER your report. Why would you report something that you didn’t check out first>? Is WKRG in such a bad way for viewer ratings you would bash a person( Or better wording) Lead your viewers to believe what you are reporting is the GODS HONEST TRUTH.You should be ASHAME of yourself for doing this. Yes the baby was left in the truck that is true, However, It was an ACCIDENT,Have you even Bothered to see if she will do an interview.get the TRUTH OUT
