PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - The Bay District School Board has voted
to ban an award-winning book called "The Fighting Ground" from
library shelves.
The book by the author Avi was banned at Wednesday's meeting
after a split vote. It chronicles a 24-hour period in the life of a
13-year-old boy during the Revolutionary War. Parents had
complained that the book, which was written in 1984, included
several profanities uttered by some soldiers.
The book is intended for the fourth-grade reading level. It won
the Newberry Medal, one of the most prestigious honors in
children's literature. The book ban will be in effect until the end
of the school year on June 30.

Hey, Y’all; I read the book. It is very good, has just the right intensity, realism and scariness to pull a 4th grader deep into the American Revolution, and has less profanity than he\she hears on the playground every day. I recommend this book highly. For grownups, it’s a pretty quick read, but worth the time, nonetheless. After all, we were all 4th graders once.
If you have grandkids who don’t have it on their required reading list, get it for them.

And remember what happened to several school districts around the country when they decided that Biology Textbooks describing Descent with Modification weren’t fit for high school students...Wooooweee!

Catcher In The Rye was on our list of books of required reading when I was in high school. We thought we were pulling something over on the teachers when we found such shocking things. It was controversial. We just didn’t tell our parents. That book would not be on the list for fourth graders. We would have to have lots of smelling salts for the Bay District School Board if it was on that list.

HAHA, do they not know that kids learn “4-letter-words” in kindergarten in public schools?  I’m sure the last thing you have to worry about them learning from is a book.

Big Deal the kids who read books like that are probably mature enough to handle it.  Also, they probably hear worse at home! Or this was on some summer reading list and the kids didn’t want to read it!

Censorship is never the answer. Recall historically when when they banned the Bible.
