Walking into the courthouse, 60-year-old Jack Wiley knew exactly what would happen when he faced a judge.
"I'll probably get life," said the convicted child rapist. When asked if he hurt the children, Wiley said, "No I didn't... It's obvious I'm not guilty."
But, a Conecuh County jury disagreed when they convicted him last month of raping his 3-year-old step daughter and her 17-year old brother. They also convicted him of sodomizing the teen. A judge showed he disagreed as well when he sentenced Wiley Friday to three consecutive life sentences.
"We're very happy with that," said District Attorney Tommy Chapman, who prosecuted the case. "We're pleased the judge listened to what we had to say and followed our recommendation in this case," he said.
During the sentencing hearing, Chapman called the children's counselors to testify.
"The long term effects we're trying to decrease is depression, anxiety and becoming sexually active at an early age," said Stephanie Delahoussaie, the counselor of the youngest victim.
Delahoussaie and the other counselor said the children would spend the rest of their lives trying to overcome the sexual abuse. Chapman told the judge that's why Wiley should spend the rest of his life in jail. Neighbors in Conecuh County who have followed the case seem to agree.
"I feel sorry for the children," said Quintella Jackson. "It was heart breaking. It was disgusting. There's just a whole lot of words you can use to describe what this man did," said Jean Durant.
The defense didn't call any witnesses, and when the judge asked Wiley if he had anything to say Wiley said "I better pass." But, leaving the courthouse Wiley didn't hold his tounge.
"This is a kangaroo court, and I didn't get a fair trial," said Wiley.
Wiley is planning to appeal his sentence with a new court appointed attorney.
Even if his appeal fails, Alabama law entitles him to a parole hearing in ten years.
