DARDENNE PRAIRIE, Mo. (AP) - It's too late to help the person who inspired the law. But city officials in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, have unanimously passed a measure that makes online harassment a crime. The officials moved on the measure days after learning a 13-year-old girl killed herself after receiving cruel messages on the Internet. The new law makes Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.
Mayor Pam Fogarty hopes passing the bill will make sure something like this never happens again anywhere. Authorities say Megan Meier killed herself after getting a series of hurtful messages online.
It turned out the messages were being generated by a mother of a girl who had had a falling out with the teen. Authorities have said they couldn't find a crime to charge anyone with in connection with the Meier case.
