Surfers in Orange Beach say it's nearly impossible for them to catch a wave! Beachfront condos have put up fences and "No Trespassing" signs to keep people off their property, but the surfers says one condo has gone a little too far in their efforts to keep them out.

"We're people, not cattle," says surfer Mike Tamburello. "It's a safety issue, one of us could get hurt."

Owners of the Summer Breeze Condominiums have put up barbed wire along the property's west wall. Surfers say they use the wall as a short-cut to the beach and say other beach access points are too crowded and hard to get to.

"We're not farm animals," says Maggie Caver. "We're kids, you don't need to put up barbed wire to keep us out, they don't own the beach, it's everyone's beach, it's a public place and should be enjoyed by everyone."

A Summer Breeze property owner told News 5 the barbed wire was put up because the condo is privately owned. Surfers we spoke to say they'll take their fight to Summer Breeze Property Owner's Association and to City Hall.

Ahh, remember I did not start this complaint.  Surfers did.  I’ll shut up for now.  Good luck with your fight.  Besides, I can not stay out in the sun long---skin cancer.

Alocal, go hang out with your kid and spend less time trying to fight with people on message boards.  This story is really worth hearing, and any idiot can see that this condo is fowl in its actions.  Come on barb wire to keep kids from running on a wall.  Give me a break.

You are just one of those owners and you are trying to make it look not quite so bad.  Take the barb wire down, let the kids pass, and the world we be a better place, and no one care how they do it back home.

Now can you please go outside and enjoy the weather.

I see you point.  I agree to disagree in some aspect, and you are so right about the firefighters.  They will do a duty no matter what.  Wasn’t trying to say it like that.

This point isn’t all about surfers, it is about everyone.  If one condo can put up barb wire and gates to prevent you from completely getting to the beach, then they all can do it.  Well if they all can do it, and did, how many miles of beach would be left.  What if you drove the family down from Foley and could not find a empty spot in the public lots.  What would you do.  Park at Publix and drag the family across the beach highway, Mr. FROGGER.

Last time I checked you could count on one finger how many people actually lived in their own home on the beach in Orange Beach AL.  Notice I said home, not concrete match box.  Boy times sure change.  That was back in the day when the city planners had a height restriction though, and Shirley and Wayne knew how to dance.  Who knew?

MOVE??, we did !!!!!!!

Oh, by the way.....the type of fun you are having will cause the Fire Department to come to your rescue or call for help and no wire has ever stopped them.  Neither has a parked car, dog, burgler bars or shot gun.  Maybe you need to ‘hang’ with them for a couple of days and see what fun they have on a daily basis.

Surfer Joe, you continue to dig your hole even deeper.  I live south of I-10, graduated from Foley High School way before there was a Gulf Shores High School and lived 20 of my years in Gulf Shores.  No, never lived in Orange Beach.  Maybe the problem is with Orange Beach instead of Gulf Shores?  You sound very angry but not particullarly about the wire.  What else is bugging you?  You continue to mention a rich old fart snob--who have you had a run in with?  Who is having to report your actions?  Grow up man.  Kids are having fun just not the way you are having fun.  If you don’t like---MOVE.

It is sad that the property owners had to go to the extreme of putting up barbed wire in order to protect their property.  Sure, the beach is public property, but cutting across someone’s property just so you save a step or two is not right.  Would you like it if they used your surf board to cross a ditch although there was a bridge a little ways down the road ??  Crossing on their grass/property in order to get where you are going is trespassing, regardless of where it is.  Kids now days have lost all respect for everyone and everything (save a few that were brought up the way they should have been).  Fighting a HOA ???  ROFLOL....you would be better off trying to buy into the HOA instead of fighting them...but then you would have to live by their rules...something you obviously dont want to do in the first place.  Fight City Hall ??  Sure, it’s possible. BUT unless they are breaking an Ordinance, you would fare better using the public access point.  Good Luck Dude !!

We should go ahead and outlaw all fun, it would probably help the WAR on DRUGS.  As for the Fairhope issue, we think they should also outlaw people who drive into people on skateboards.  Opps that might involve some old snobs wife who was on her blueberry.  We better not make a law against rich people unless it involves lowering their taxes.

there are plenty of public accesses along the beach, use one of them. i have to as well, i own no property at the gulf. i hate the developement at the beach but they did what they did and i am left to deal with it if i want ot enjoy th ebeach, which is obviously not public. anymore. sure you can enjoy the beach you just have tp access it where the state says i can, not just where i happen to want to.

skateboarding should be against the law n fairhope, its inherently dangerous, and not only prohibited there but also many other cities. first kid gets hurt on city property will result in a huge liability for the city. remember the child who was killed in fairhope go carting with his dad a few uears ago, his parents extracted a huge judgement from the city, even with the signs and the fact his parents were with him.

Sorry to hear you are laughing so hard that you can’t understand that this is about you too.  The 3 public beaches in Orange Beach are already so overcrowded, that on a good summer day, a man could get rich on all the illegal parking tickets slammed on the glass.  In other words, just because some rich old fart says it is illegal, doesn’t make it right.  To elaborate though, that wire is not just for surfers, it is for poor people too....  These condo owners don’t even want you on the beach at all, unless you are paying rental fees to them.

Oh and here is another one for you to laugh about, anyone from above I-10 is a Yankee.  No worries though, we don’t hold your ignorance against you.  HAHA

I have really got a good laugh today.  Thank you.  Surfer Joe thank you for responding and knowing me so well?  I was born in North Alabama and have never moved out of the state.  God has put me here and not moved me anywhere else, like the West Coast.  I am a single parent making it from one pay check to the other.  I struggle and yes I enjoy taking my little one to the beach but I do abide by the rules and go to the designated public beaches.  I do not tresspass on private property.  Isn’t this what it is really about?  I do not have anything against the surfers, more power to you!  Until things change in Montgomery, the law is the law and we have to abide by it.  If you don’t like it, move or vote.  Thanks for the laughs though, I enjoyed it!  A great stress release. smile
