"We don't want another subdivision built here," says Bromley resident Allison Hill. "We'd like to keep the land around here how it is and preserve some of the local history."
Some historians believe the Hammock House was used by a Union general during the Battle of Blakeley, however, the Baldwin County Department of Archives and History believes the house holds little historical value.
"It was probably used as an artillery house or housed sharp-shooters," says Nick Warren with the Baldwin County Department of Archives and History. "But it holds little historical value because the inside has been rebuilt and remodeled."
"I'm not out to ruin any pieces of local history," says developer Bob Hyman. "I checked with officials and the house isn't on any state or national historical registries. I just want to be able to use the land for what I bought it for."
The Baldwin County Commission will make a final decision on the future of the house and the property at an August 21st meeting.
