One bar surrounded by nine apartments has created less than a cozy neighborhood.

"I think everyone in the neighborhood is fed up with it," says Randall Wick.

For years, people who live in the 400 block of Dauphin Street have fought to shut down what's been a series of night clubs at 455 Dauphin Street. In May, News Five first aired home video showing what neighbors say is bar patrons vomiting and urinating on the sidewalk.

"It's not that I'm opposed to the club itself. I'm opposed to the way they disrespect their neighbors," says Chuck Nickles, who showed up at Tuesday's Mobile City Council meeting hoping to encourage council members to deny a liquor license to the latest club opening up in the infamous building.

"There is some concern about whether the previous owner will get back involved at some point, but that's a bridge we'll have to cross when we get there," said Councilwoman Connie Hudson, who insists the council had no choice but to grant the license.

Since last spring, the club has been renamed The Alabama Music Box, and at least on paper it has new owners, but neighbors insist the problems are exactly the same.

"There was a young man who exposed his genitals to those standing around," says Bruce Moseley, referring to new home video he says was recorded in the last few weeks. "There's drumming at 3 o'clock in the morning for no necessary reason, and there's a lot of loud noise that's taking place," says Moseley.

David Matthews, co-owner of The Alabama Music Box, showed up at the council meeting to defend his bar, telling News Five they will clean up their act. "After hearing the severity of it will will step it up," says Matthews. "I don't want to lose the privilege to sell alcohol. "

Matthews assured us the previous owner, who was caught selling alcohol to minors, will not be a part of his new business. "They can come have a drink with us, but no," says Matthews.

The city council unanimously approved the bar's liquor license, but told the owners they will be watched.

MeAmerican, you sound like you’re ready for another prohibition.

Excuse Me, Why would you even consider that the City council would even think twice about the Community!  Their only concern is bringing in $$$$
and not accepting any responsibility!

Mobiles entertainment complex is a bunch of drunks staggering around downtown. That’s a fine way to look out for the community. Funny how people gripe about the price of fuel but continue to waste $$$ in these establishments.

It is kind of a mystery why people would move into a place above a bar and then want the bar to leave.  I would have thought part of the appeal of living downtown would be the places to eat and party within walking distance.
. Beats me…...

This is a highly inaccurate representation of the Alabama Music Box. I have been here several times to see bands play, and not ONCE have I seen a fight break out or witnessed someone vomiting on the streets. I would also say from personal experience that the average age of the people in the bar tends to be in the mid-twenties and I’ve never seen people who appear underage or had an underage wristband on drinking in the bar. As far as hearing “drumming for no apparent reason”—It’s called the ALABAMA MUSIC BOX. It’s a MUSIC CLUB—and APPARENTLY that’s the REASON you hear DRUMS.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Hey whiners: Saad Healthcare moved into a space where a Wal-Mart used to be. You better go make sure that Sam Walton’s corpse isn’t running the show over there.

These people moved into an area that is zoned for bars and other forms of nighttime entertainment, then they expect the neighborhood to change for them? Ridiculous!

Sounds to me like these whiney babies need to either suck it up and deal with it or move.

Or better yet, get a life.

Did these condo people bother to spend any time on Dauphin St. before moving there?
. This is almost like moving into the county and then wanting to be in the city. lol
