a Tuscaloosa man for allegedly using phony documents to obtain
nearly $1 million in loans from a bank.
Dennis Raymond Sheffield was indicted on six counts of bank
fraud last week for allegedly telling a Marengo County bank he had
contracts to chop down trees and backing it up with counterfeit
contracts, deeds and other documents.
Sheffield owned and operated Tall Timber Incorporated in
Tuscaloosa.
The indictment said he persuaded Demopolis-based Robertson
Banking Company to approve applications for six loans totaling
$953,557 from February 2001 to July 2005.
Robertson Banking has already won a $952,559 civil judgment
against Sheffield in Marengo County Circuit Court related to the
loans.
An attorney representing Robertson said the bank hasn't
collected any money and doesn't know where it went.
