MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Some Alabama motorists might need to buy
more auto liability insurance in a few months.
Governor Bob Riley says he intends to sign legislation raising
Alabama's minimum insurance requirements for the first time in 25
years.
The Legislature approved a bill May 8 that would raise Alabama's
minimum limits for mandatory auto liability insurance.
The bill is a compromise between plaintiff lawyers and insurance
companies and raises limits that haven't been changed since 1983.
It was sponsored by Democratic Russellville Senator Roger
Bedford who says the changes are long overdue to protect motorists
who are hit in traffic accidents.
The Legislature passed a similar bill last year, but the
governor vetoed it because it would have taken effect immediately
and insurance companies wouldn't have time to adjust.
Bedford and Democratic Grove Hill Representative Marc Keahey
redesigned the new bill so it will take effect in three months for
new policies and six months for renewals.

This is another example of what happens when you let the Insurance companies write laws for their industry.

Great Job Governor Riley. Punish all of the people who have insurance.  You know good and well that the people who claim that they can’t afford the insurance and continuously drive without it, still will not get insurance.  You are making it more difficult for them to ever afford it.

Those of us who have always carried liability insurance will find it more difficult to pay for it.  We tried to take higher deductibles just to keep the cost down.  Thanks to you, we will now have to pay a lot more.  The responsible people who have insurance and have an accident will pay the rest of the expenses if they are at fault.

All the service industries, insurance, power, gas seem to be singing the same song. Just like the commerical on t.v. “ I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT NOW” but in this case they are talking about your money. I might as well sing my own song” I WANT SERVICE AND I WANT IT NOW”,I think I’m entitled to my hopes and dreams.

Oh gosh… Insurance on my truck is already ridiculous. Between this and gas prices I will become homeless.

I’ve had insurance for many many years and only had one claim, for a windshield. I could have bought two or three new cars with just my premiums. I didn’t like it when they made it mandatory but I already had it so I sat quite. Now we are going to have Mandatory rate increases ever so often, because I don’t think they’re going to give us this extra coverage at their expense. The oil industry has us in a box,the insurance industry has us in a box on home insurance, the power company is getting ready to join the group, now Mandatory car insurance increases,I say increases because I don’t believe this will be a one time thing. Is anyone else feeling boxed in a corner. All these service companies wanting more money but don’t want to give any of it back when it comes claim time.

When I went in to pay for my tag in NJ, I had to bring proof of insurance. I think that would be a first step. People who are driving around in 4 K lb cars need to be responsible and make sure they are protected if and WHEN they injure or damage property. Two years ago, a woman in the parking lot of the license bureau ripped up my truck door. No insurance and she lied about the information on the card she exchanged. Earlier this year my husband was rear ended by someone without insurance. Why should my insurance company have to foot these bills?
