MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Some Alabama motorists might need to buy
more auto liability insurance in a few months.
Governor Bob Riley says he intends to sign legislation raising
Alabama's minimum insurance requirements for the first time in 25
years.
The Legislature approved a bill May 8 that would raise Alabama's
minimum limits for mandatory auto liability insurance.
The bill is a compromise between plaintiff lawyers and insurance
companies and raises limits that haven't been changed since 1983.
It was sponsored by Democratic Russellville Senator Roger
Bedford who says the changes are long overdue to protect motorists
who are hit in traffic accidents.
The Legislature passed a similar bill last year, but the
governor vetoed it because it would have taken effect immediately
and insurance companies wouldn't have time to adjust.
Bedford and Democratic Grove Hill Representative Marc Keahey
redesigned the new bill so it will take effect in three months for
new policies and six months for renewals.

Thank YOU, WORKING4U! I couldn’t have said it any better, The rate increase isn’t going to affect those without insurance because they are not going to buy it,they’ll spend their money on those rims and boom boxes and the rest of us will be saddled with this rate increase and the future ones and we probably will lose those just barely able to make their payments now, which would probably mean another increase for us to cover the ones that had to quit. You did a good job,I couldn’t have said it better.

Carl- Lets say you are driving your brand new, just purchased 2005 BMW. You saved for 4 years to buy the car but you had to buy used because your credit was not so good. The car is in mint condition and not a scatch. Your job is not so hot so you could only afford liability. Your job does not offer medical insurance or short term disability. You live from pay check to pay check and spent most of your savings on the car. One day you get rear ended at an intersection by a 1987 Caprice with $1500 rims and a $1500 boom box. The driver is talking on his cell phone when he drives the trunk of your BMW into the backseat of your car. You go to the hospital with injuries and are out of work for two weeks. HE YO….he aint got a lick of insurance and all you got is liability. Your car is totaled. He just barely smashed in his bumper and drives home like nothing happened. O ye, he got a ticket for no insurance. You never collect Jack because he aint got Jack and your life is ruined.
HELLO

working4u I really like your idea about towing the car if a driver is stopped and does not have insurance.  I don’t know if you have ever seen the show parking wars but it is in Philadelphia and that is the way it is there.  If they stop you for something and you do not have insurance or a valid license or registation then they tow and impound you car until you get everything corrected.  It does not seem like that would be that hard of a law to draft and pass.

I think Crystal teeny has got it down pat,hit the nail on the head. They ( the governor and insurance companies) know that a lot of the people without insurance are not going to get insurance regardless,So where do you get the money for damages done by uninsured motorist? From the people already paying their fair share and more ,and all this at a time of record profits for the companies! I would be willing to bet this is just the start of mandatory increases and will probably come at a more rapid rate from now on. The ones just hanging on to pay their insurance will be forced to join the crowd of the uninsured. If it looks like there might be a dip in their profits they’ll just run the police out to pump up their profits for them and the city. I’m probably wrong but I do not like having a insurance police force that is funded by me.

ASDA-Even if they cancel the next day your idea gets my vote. At least an effort must be made to provide something before that tag is renewed. A simple ticket and fine is not enough. I think if a driver gets caught driving a car without liabilty insurance the car should be towed and impounded for a manditory two weeks, at the drivers/owners expense. These people need a wake up call, not a ticket. Maybe then we will see our rates drop a bit.

Great idea ASDA! The only thing about that is they have it for a month and cancel it.

Continue the part i forgot to tell all of you was he was a drunk driver?!

The minium car insurance will not fix cars today…Had a wreck recently and the guy that hit 2 cars had 20,000 in insurance the damage to my vechicle was more than that and so was the other car, so who do you think fixed our cars our own insurance.  Go Bob Riley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob Riley is a *******%@@ idiot!

Or a really crazy idea would be to require everyone to show proof of insurance when they renew their car tags.  No proof no tags.    Instead we spend/ waste police resources setting up road blocks to check for insurance.
