The Detroit Free Press reported Roy Atchison hanged himself in his cell. He was found dead this morning.
Sheriff's deputies in Michigan say Atchison had been talking online with a woman he thought was a five year old girl's mother. He was really communicating with an undercover officer.
Authorities say Atchison flew to Detroit last month. He was arrested at the airport and investigators say he was carrying gifts for the girl.
Atchison was charged with crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone under 12 years old, use of the internet to seek illicit sex, and interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual contact.
The arrest was part of an undercover internet sex sting.
His lawyer is planning to ask the judge to drop the charges.
Roy Atchison was married with three children.
