West Mobile residents will get to vote next month on Mayor Sam Jones' controversial annexation plan. Today the Probate Court selected September 18th as the election date.
Last week, Mayor Jones announced his plan to make Mobile the largest city in Alabama. To make that happen, the city hopes to annex four sections of West Mobile between Cody and Schillinger Roads. "We want to be able to provide our city services to the people in West Mobile," says Jones. "If they vote to annex into Mobile, they'll receive better police and fire protection, better roads and drainage systems and property owners wouldn't have to pay city property taxes for five years."
West Mobile residents who live in one of the four areas have until September 7th to register to vote. There will be four polling places, one for each proposed area of annexation.

Area A: Friendship Baptist Church, 545 Cody Road North
Area B: Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama, 35 Cody Road North
Area C: Lakeside Lodge, 650 Cody Road South
Area D: Fellowship Hall, Covenant Church, 7150 Hitt Road, Mobile

Mayor Sam Jones talked about the annexation plan Wednesday on News 5 at 9 a.m. You can watch the entire interview by clicking play (under video).

To continue..792K x 12 = 9.5 million. Now keep in mind this is one court room only. I think there are 3 that handle traffic. Hmmm… audit the city, cut your budgets and go away Sam. We are WEST MOBILE, “HOME OF THE FREE”.

Sam says, “show me the money’. There is a reason why it is called WEST MOBILE and not Mobile. We know you want the $$$ and have zero interest in the people. I agree with Primate’s posting… go annex Prichard.
Think about this - I went to court on a traffic ticket. It was dismissed, however I still had to pay court costs of 120.00. That day alone there was 300 people in my court room. So, 300 x 120 = 36,000 from one court room. There are an average of 22 working days in a month 22 x 36K = 792K. Where is it?

Mayor Jones, please just be honest with us...money is getting tight.  The windfall revenues that resulted from the hurricanes is gone, and the city is approaching fiscal difficulty.  The liberal approach is to grab more money from the citizens.  The conservative approach is to limit spending and cut out pork-barrel.  Guess which one we want!
If you really want to be the “largest city in Alabama,” annex Prichard.  This would produce immediate revenue, and the government infrastructure, including Police, Fire, and Municipal Buildings are already in place.

Mayor Jones, your statement about the “better Police and Fire protection” for our neighborhood is simply not true.  It’s the “multi-million dollar center” that you want us to pay for.  We don’t need it!  We’re already in the “Police Jurisdiction” area now, and the services are good.  And yes, we are already paying extra for those services in the form of additional sales taxes that go to the City.

Are there any attorneys out there who would be willing to file a petition with the Probate Court to block this election?  I see no other way to stop the railroading attempt (the third attempt) to grab up our homes and our money.  When we vote it down, they will just come up with another “restructuring” arrangement and try again!

Water bills have nothing to do with the city...and they are usually about $25.  I am sure that in time there will be a push to eliminate septic tanks but they are not that great anyway.  Welcome to Mobile!

also..while i’m on it.. if you’re thinking of building a house in the city..no house can be built in the city limits without city sewage and water..means all building will stop till they get water and sewage to that area?hmmm

the sewage protion of your water bill is for processing the water used..sooo if you have a pool.. you’re screwed..if you allow them to run sewage lines past your house..even though you don’t hook up to it.. you’ll have to pay a sewage charge..just because it runs by your house..ask the people in pine hurst sub.

...oh yeah.. those nice paved city streets in your neighborhood that you’re looking forward to..to get rid of your dirt streets… they certainly will pave them..cause theres a city law that says there can be no dirt streets in the city limits.. so they will most definitely send a city appraiser by to acess the value of your frontal line.. and you’ll be charged ‘by the foot’ for the paving.. payment due immediately..or acessed as a lean on your property by the city..

city services are ‘not’ free people..example water/sewage..instead of a 20.00 water bill.. yours will prolly be in the neighborhood of 65.00 per month..septic tanks are not allowed in the sity limits.. yours will be grandfathered in.. but you can’t fix it if it breaks..and you’ll have to pay to have it removed and hooked up to city sewage and water..
