MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Today is an official state holiday in
Alabama for the birthday of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Tuesday will be the 200th anniversary of Davis' birth, but state
law sets the holiday on the first Monday in June.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans are planning a ceremony at noon
on the Capitol grounds in Montgomery to recognize Davis. State
Commander Leonard Wilson says more activities honoring Davis are
planned for June 14.

I am proud to have the opportunity to honor the troops from any of this Nation’s wars that have fought and died. I might not agree on the cause or purpose of some of the wars but I support the troops and their memories, and I believe that confederate president Jefferson Davis’s birthday falls in that category just as ABE Lincoln’s does and many others.
