MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Representatives of senior citizens
groups have urged the Alabama Legislature to pass a proposed
constitutional amendment that would remove the state sales tax from
groceries.
The speaker of the Alabama Silver-Haired Legislature,
85-year-old Bill Adams of Madison County, says removing the state's
4 percent tax on groceries would help senior citizens on fixed
incomes. He said senior citizens often must choose between buying
groceries or medicine.
With three days remaining in the 2008 regular session, the
Democrat backed bill is currently stymied in the Senate. Senate
Republicans want to attach it to a bill to change property tax
reappraisals from annually to once every four years.
Adams and the executive director of the AARP, Joan Carter,
joined the House and Senate sponsors of the bill Tuesday at a news
conference. The bill has already passed the House.

If I had to choose between the two,I would probably choose to abolish the grocery tax .If i chose the other one that would make me feel real bad knowing that for some people doing away with the grocery tax would make it easier to feed their kids a little more. I don’t think it would effect the senior citizens as much as the working families at or below the poverty level. I have seen a couple of cases like that right here in the county, working families who after rent, power and other things, had little or nothing left to buy groceries with and it tears your heart out to see hungry little babies. I would benefit from either one or both but it would be a hard pill to swallow if I thought it would deprive one child ,one meal. I’m a senior citizen but our kids come first. I know where you are coming from ASDA talking about state taxes,I’ve been there and still do that and it’s aggravating.BYE! catch you on the net.

That poor senior citizen shopping in the photo would have a lot of young men offering to help her shop.

Abolishing Grocery Tax will help Senior Citizens but hurt everyone else.  I would like to see Alabama get rid of the grocery tax but I do not want to see them get rid of the credit you are given for paying your federal taxes.  I have to pay the state some money every year no matter how much they take out.  I can only imagine how high that amount will go if I can no longer claim what I pay in federal taxes.

I’m in favor of both bills people, work together and both sides of the senate will win.
