PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A tornado struck Prattville today andcaused significant damages to many homes and businesses as store
employees and customers scrambled into makeshift shelters.
Officials say two people were critically injured, 27 had minor
injuries and no deaths were reported.
Mayor Jim Byard said emergency crews went door-to-door in a
search for any storm victims trapped in the wreckage. It was not
immediately clear if all residents were located. Some 9,000 homes
and businesses were without power. A curfew began as darkness fell.
Byard said the 2:50 p.m. tornado destroyed 20 to 30 homes and
damaged more than 170 others.
Shelters opened at churches and school buses shuttled storm
victims out of the stricken area to the city's civic center.
