More than fifty people spent all day Wednesday searching Mobile Bay for the bodies of four small children. Thick fog forced search crews to pull in their boats just before 4pm, but the thought of the infant and three toddlers still missing weighed heavy on everyone's hearts.
"I just can not stand it," said Mac McRae, owner of Cedar Point Fishing Pier, where many of the search boats came in and out. "It just would break your heart," he said.
Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran says the children's father, Lan Loung, 37, confessed to throwing his kids, ages 3, 2, 1, and 4 months, off the Dauphin Island Bridge Monday.
"We are really in the recovery stage at this point," said Sheriff Cochran. "We don't believe the chances of someone in the water right here being alive is very good," Cochran said.
Investigators say the children are presumed dead, though as of late Wednesday evening no bodies had been found.
During the search, the scene was emotional at times. One woman who had no connection to the children sobbed uncontrollably as she laid flowers on the bank.
"They're babies, they're babies," cried the woman, who would not tell us her name.
Six law enforcement and search agencies worked together Wednesday using helicopters, cadaver dogs, ATV's and boats.
Cochran says the search will resume Thursday morning, and he's vowing not to stop looking until the bodies are found.
The captain of the Mobile County Sheriff Office's flotilla team says they've never failed to find a body in all the searches he can remember.
Loung is being held at the Mobile Metro Jail. He's charged with four counts of capital murder. His first court appearace is at 9am Thursday.
