New 5 viewers have debated on wkrg.com whether the gun a student brought to Clark School of Math, Science and Technology on Monday was loaded or not.
As we reported earlier, Mobile County school officials say the gun, found in the student's book bag, was loaded.

The child's mother contacted News 5 to say school officials were misinformed. She says her son had the gun and a loaded clip in his book bag, but claims the clip was never in the gun.

News 5 investigated her claims. Chickasaw police could not confirm whether the loaded clip was ever in fact in the gun. But Sgt. Gerald Thornton said it doesn't matter. As far as the law is concerned, a loaded clip is the same thing as a loaded gun.

Other viewers said the student would've automatically been charged with a felony, if the gun had been loaded. Not true says Thornton. Possession of a fire arm on school grounds is not an automatic felony. Thornton said the student would only be charged with a felony if he had a prior record.

New 5 viewers have debated on wkrg.com whether the gun a student brought to Clark School of Math, Science and Technology on Monday was loaded or not. Mobile County school officials put the debate to rest. Spokesperson Nancy Pierce says the gun, found in the student's book bag, was loaded. An eighth grade student at Clark School of Math, Science, and Technology in Chickasaw has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun to school.
School officials say the gun belongs to the child's father.
Several classmates found out that the child had the gun.. and alerted teachers.
In a letter to parents, the school's principal said the student hid the gun in his backpack.
News 5 was told the school did not go into lockdown because there was no immediate danger.
One parent told News 5 that the school should have told them about what happened yesterday...not today.
"If I hadn't called, If my son hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known. I wouldn't known. I would've thought it had just been a normal day," said parent Demetria Clark.
"This is something we may have to figure out a better way to handle to let parents know, how soon to let parents know, etcetera," said Mobile County Public School System spokesperson Nancy Pierce.
The student has been arrested and won't be allowed to return..
School officials say the student hasn't had any past disciplinary problems.

I have watched the news every night and it seems too often that a gun and school go hand in hand. We teach our children lessons that we hope will follow them all their life, but the outside world dosen’t always teach what we teach. They are influenced by evil as well as good. We think this will not happen in our home. It can. A child makes a mistake and shold be punished so he can learn. This child could be yours or mine. He should be punished and is. He will learn. But do you think that your child is above this? Would you want your child to be able to learn from this and be a better person? I am not trying to downgrade the seriosness of what he did but I would like him to know that if you are down and you are trying to get up I will not try to keep you down but I will help you up. After all isn’t that what we are suppose to do. How can we teach our children to be a better person if we’re not ourselves.

I agree with you inthesystem and i also agree with BH. I’m not here to judge this kid. It’s not my place. I am simply voicing my concerns as a parent on the issue of guns in school not against the child inparicular. There simply is no excuse for a gun in school period and maybe the media did not get all the facts correct, but the fact is there was a gun brought to school by a student. That is a fact and that is what i’m voicing my concerns about. It is my right as a citizen of the United States of America and I will exercise my right. I think we as parents need to be concerned with the well being of our children. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE. And if this child meant no harm and he was just trying to “show off” I’m sure by now, he has learned his lesson. And I wish nothing but the best for him.

HELLO?!?  Every comment that has been made in defense of the child has stated that the child was wrong. “THE CHILD WAS WRONG!!!” No one is saying that what he did was okay or that he should be “let off easy”. Should the child be exempt from all punishment just because he makes good grades and has never been in trouble? NO! But it should and WILL play into what happens to him in court. THIS IS A CHILD HERE PEOPLE! but who cares, right? We should just throw him on death row or something, RIGHT??? Unfortunately for those of you who DO feel that way, we have a court system that punishes based on the degree of the crime and menial things such as “loaded or not” DOES MATTER THERE! The fact of the matter is, that the story got misconstrued. Our defense was for ACCURACY in the media. We as the public were misinformed. The gun was not loaded. END OF STORY! You guys keep going at it,but JUST REMEMBER: You are not his judge, but for judging him you will be judged. As for me, I’m done. “BH, OUT!”

Random comments:  when you cap all your words it means you are screaming on the computer.....concern? In regards to a comment made about this blue ribbon school and the down play of events.........is it possible that you are unaware of many events in our county schools? I believe eveything done at this school is under the microscope whether negative or positive. The media chooses to report what they desire , and the school system has a say in it.  The child made a mistake that is obvious, the regret and consequences are there , obviously. What we as a community need to take responsibility for is WHY our children are so stressed, so angry, so misguided that they feel the need to lash out for attention. Maybe, when we direct the attention at our damaged society and the parenting that is sometimes NOT taking place that we will be able to solve some problems.

There are many good hearted people who do things like this.  I am outraged by this.  Im sure the Columbine shooters were good people too!!!  A good person would not bring a gun to school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake Up!  Poor thing he was just wanting to show off.  I am definately glad this student is out of Clarke Magnet School.

I’m sure that the child is sorry for his actions and yes he maybe a good kid, I’m not commenting to sabatage one child for his actions. I am a mother and it irritates me that it seems everytime I turn on the news there’s a new story involving a gun at school.  As a parent it’s very unsettling, especially when it’s close at home. My comments are not meant towards the child inparticular, but to the matter at hand. The matter at hand is there was a gun brought to school and it bothers me to see people making excuses for that. I feel thats why our society is the way it is. There is no excuse for bring a gun to school and if we are lenient on one student because he was trying to “show it off”, then what happens next time when a student brings a gun to school and does mean harm to fellow students. And to put pensil sharpeners, hole puncher, and scissors in the same category as a gun.....come on people.....get a grip. How many stories ahave you heard involving a deadly hole puncher at school!

This will be my last time to comment on this. I personally know the student involved. I have spoken with the parents of this student and I can assure you no one feels as bad about this as they do. The boy involved had absolutely no ill will toward anyone. He was just trying to show off to his friends. Was it stupid, yes it was. Is he extremly humbled and sorry for what he did, you can’t even imagine. I am sure that everyone that has boys or was once a young boy know that they like to show off to their friends and that is all that this was. Everyone in life makes bad decisions at some point. Part of me is glad they he made a bad decision now while he is still young and can learn from his mistake. He is a really good kid with a good heart that made a bad choice. He accepts full responsibility for what he did and he is learning from it. He is a fine young man who deserves a second chance and I know that he will get one and make the best out of it.
