Mobile schools are out for the summer but there's still work going on at Scarborough Middle School.A mangled fence and erosion were making it easy for kids to sneak off campus and get into plenty of trouble.
School officials have done minor fix-it jobs here and there but News 5 uncovered the latest problem.
According to the Mobile County District Attorney's office, a report of a stolen gun behind campus and allegations of a student's sexual assault are raising concerns.
We talked to the school system's facilities manager Tommy Sheffield on Tuesday and he promised to look into the problem.
On Friday, Sheffield delivered on that promise. His staff has already started cutting back trees and adding dirt to the corner lot.
Sheffield says it's a work in progress. "I met with some of our staff members out there and assessed the situation. We've made plans to mobilize some equipment to start the process of trying to correct the issue we have in the Northeast corner of the campus. Our intention is to try to clear the vegetation that gives the children that opportunity to dash behind and hide from the staff or parents and so forth. We wanna make the sight more visible and clear."
Sheffield says they will also add a fence in the back corner. We're told the work should be done in time for the next school year.
