News 5 Investigates parents getting into trouble because their kids are skipping school.

Parents in Mobile County better make sure their kids are going to class.

Authorities are cracking down on truancy cases and parents are getting busted too.

More than 60 cases were on Thursday's docket.

Three parents were previously warned by the judge and were sent to jail this time.

One of those parents arrested is Samantha Green. She has 8 children and one grandchild.

Dozens of parents showed up for their court appearance but some moms and dads didn't bother coming to court. A warrant has been issued in those cases.

Parents face a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and could be sentenced to a jail sentence of up to a year.

Most of today's parents got a warning but Angela Dyar requested a trial in her case. She also failed a mandatory drug test and admitted her use to Tiffany Craig.

"Explain to me how you have 4 kids at home, their dads are not really in the picture and you smoke marijuana? Angela responds, "I don't do it all the time. I've only hit it twice in the last 6 or 7 months. Do you want to keep your kids? Yes, most definitely. They're my life."

Dyar's case is now going to the Department of Human Resources to decide if she gets to keep her kids.

That’s exactly what I’m saying Bama Bob. You watch your kid walk into school, then lunch period rolls around, and they’re sneaking off with their friend who’s parents let them drive to school. Why should that kid’s parents go to jail? I think if the kid is over 12, THEY should go to jail for skipping school!

My other favorite, if you get caught skipping school, you get TWO DAYS SUSPENSION! So if you don’t want to go to school, if you skip, they wont’ let you go to school!

I had a helluva time keeping my youngest in school and I would drop him off at the front door and watch him walk into the building.

Wait. So if your kid doesn’t go to school, the parent goes to jail? I know so many parents who send their kids off to school in good faith...drop them off at the front door, then they just skidaddle to the parking lot and leave with a friend to go smoke weed and get pregnant. How is that the parent’s fault? I wouldn’t want go to jail because my kid hates school and is a chronic skipper.

We are going to have so many parents calling the cops to escort their child to school, that we’re not going to have any cops actually out protecting us from all these bad guys in hoodies.

I think if the kid is over the age of 12, that child should go to jail, not the parent. By the age of 12 you are old enough to get yourself on the bus with or without your lazy no-good parents, so if you’re not going to school, it’s because you’re a bad apple, and should be locked up anyway!

I can’t believe this woman! Children not going to school,smoking pot,fathers not in the picture! This woman isn’t showing love for her kids! She seems to be worrying about nothing but her own uncontrolled wants. I have personally seen a similar case and it was a rapid slide down hill for the woman. She lost her house,her kids and the fathers(3) nowhere in the picture and she said she didn’t know why all this happened to her. No system is perfect but I would be willing to bet this truency system is 90% effective in spotting troubled families that bare closer observations.

They can be over the top at times. And should really take time to investigate into the situation before doing some of the things that they do.
But you know, some people just get away with it. I dated this loser in highschool for about a year. And his mom forced him to drop out of school so that he could stay home and watch the baby while she went to work. (that baby was the birth control poster child… no one else would babysit) and he ended up getting held back a couple years, I think he’s a junior in highschool still and has to go to night school because of what she did. But they didn’t get in trouble? Doesnt seem fair at all.

Ya know, those truency officers are so mean. I had a teacher report me for being late to school every day for about a month. Though, I think my situation should have kept me out of trouble. I was 13 and my house caught on fire, completely burned down and we lost everything except the car. I went to Burns middle school, my house that burned down was in Vista Ridge right down the street, and we moved into an apartment complex by davidson highschool while the house was being rebuilt. And my poor mother, had 5 kids that she had to take to school every day and we all went to different schools all over west mobile and because we lived so far away I was late allot. I remember my teacher yelling and me and telling me that it wasn’t a valid excuse (she even wrote me up for not having uniform shoes on) and then she told me she was reporting me to the truency people and they almost arrested my mom. It was horrible. Im not saying that all these people are in these situations. But seriously. (cont)
