You can see Jennifer Abney bright and early on News 5 starting at 5:00 a.m with Bill Riales and John Nodar. She also co-anchors News 5 at Noon. Jennifer was honored to be the recipient of the 2007 Alabama Associated Press "Best Anchor" award. She began her television news career in Rome, Ga. at CNWG News in 1997. She hosted a noon talk show and co-anchored the evening newscast.
Then, she shocked family and friends when she decided to tackle early morning news. She moved to Wilmington, N.C. in 1999 and co-anchored the morning and noon shows for WECT-TV. While in Wilmington, Jennifer was selected by listeners as their favorite local television anchor by a morning radio show. She received 1st place North Carolina Associated Press awards for Best Health, Best Series and Best Feature reports. Her most daring health piece was going under "the laser" for an in-depth look at Lasik eye surgery.
Though excited about her news awards, she is most proud of an off-air accomplishment. Jennifer began a holiday fundraiser at WECT for local children. In its second year, the project raised more than $100,000 for the Salvation Army. Many of the local families were still in need due to the destruction of Hurricane Floyd.
Jennifer is an Alabama native (and is glad to be back)! She graduated from Carroll High School in Ozark, Alabama and received her bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and Marketing from Troy State University. While at Troy she was an evening and noon anchor for TSU's cable news broadcasts. She was also a member of Kappa Delta sorority, which started Jennifer's passion for volunteering.
Jennifer enjoys working with children and promoting education among youth. She worked with various youth programs while in Wilmington with the local Junior League organization. And she is excited about working with youth groups along the Gulf Coast. She and her husband, Clay, attend Life Church in Mobile.
Jennifer and Clay enjoy traveling, kayaking and finding new ways to add to the restoration of their historic home. They also enjoy spending time with their three beautiful "children," -- two Jack Russell Terriers named Einstein and Hula and, a cat who sometimes answers to Bella.
