MIAMI (AP) - A Harvard University survey released today says
nearly one-fourth of people in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina
would refuse to evacuate for a storm if told to.
The survey found even after their experience in 2005, nearly a
quarter of people in Katrina-affected areas would not evacuate.
Overall, 27 percent of coastal residents in eight states agreed.
Professor Robert Blendon led the study. He says people were
motivated mostly by a combination of their faith in the stability
of their homes and their fears of an evacuation.
The survey found residents of hurricane-prone areas worry most
about having sufficient gas, medical care and fresh water to
survive a storm. But they also fear violence.

Sweetnsour, I’m sorry you lost everything but your life during the storm, but that’s no reason to be hateful to me in the Coca Cola thread because I stay during storms to be with my family and have never had any damage. George County, MS is not a “surge county” nor is it an evactuaion zone, according to http://chps.sam.usace.army.mil/USHESdata/Mississippi/msmainreport.htm
I don’t know why you chose to live in a low lying area, maybe it’s lack of common sense, as you would say?

When I am scared I run.  I lost everything in Katrina with no insurance coverage.  But, I have the common sense to know you cannot replace life.  I have a 10 year old and a good job but am very frugle.  If a hurricane is coming and I am in the path I will spend every dime I have to take my child to the highest mountain top even if we have to pitch a tent and live in my car.  That is what memories are made of.  We had five foot of flood water in Katrina and he would not be living to tell about it if I had not made good decisions.  We have more today than we have every had before with no FEMA money.  My worldly possessions aren’t worth a thing if my child is not safe.

KxVx, yes there is no place like home, i would rather be in my home, any time than a shelter,or on the road, or even if i could afford martha’s vineyard, i would still rather be in my home.

It’s just further proof that hurricanes and the weather they bring are terribly unpredictable and typically affect the entire South, not just coastal counties, and not just in the “predicted path”. So if you don’t have a few grand saved up to just drive out to the Mid-West or to go tour Martha’s Vinyard, why not just stay somewhere where you can be surrounded by all the things you hold dear? I’d much rather die in MY home with My things, than holed up in an overpriced hotel somewhere.

KxVx , that’s terrible.

Yeah I know some one at a certain fancy boarding stable that took 4 of their horses to Birmingham for Ivan, I believe it was, and the storm created tornadoes up there that did damage to stable they took them to! Ironically enough the remaining horses and the stable in West Mobile were just fine!

KxVx , i am with you on that, i have 4 dogs, 7 cats if they can not leave i surely will not. i heard to many horror stories coming out of mississippi about pets left behind.

KxVx, don’t mind them. They are nuts! Who can afford to evacuate horses? No one seems to address the money issue. How were that many people supposed to leave NOLA without transportation and without money and put their pets in a safe place? Oh wait, it wasnt the hurricane that flooded NOLA. It was the faulty levees. We don’t have to worry about that here.

How am I supposed to stick my horses, cats, and hamsters in my coupe and “go on vacation”? I’m pretty sure Disney World/Six Flags doesn’t have a stables out back!
