The public beach in Gulf Shores is gone. Hurricane Gustav pounded Pleasure Island, wiping out much of the multi-million dollar beach re-nourishment project...a project put into place after Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina.

The Gulf of Mexico reclaimed the beach Monday morning. Relentless waves pushed water up to the boardwalk, swallowing 50 to 100 yards of pristine beachfront property. Eight to ten foot seas created a dangerous and persistent storm surge for most of the morning.

Double-red flags, meaning the water is closed to the public, are flying up and down the beach. But despite the warning flags, police officers were forced to move curious onlookers out of the water. Dangerous surf conditions and the possibility of more beach erosion will continue for at least another day.

This is the reason 21st Avenue and all the other streets flooded after Ivan. Instead of taking the money they had for the drainage(sp?) system that had come from the state, it ALL went to the renourishment of the beach. I moved away from Gulf Shores because of the way residents are treated, not to mention the kids of pleasure island. Its almost like they dont care that residents are there all year around, they have to take care of those tourists.

the only thing I see tourist tax money going for is building more for the tourist to have to rebuild after a storm so we will have tourist tax dollar to build something bigger after the next storm and it just keeps going in a circle. Let nature alone. You might be suprise at how beautiful it is, you don’t have to repair it, and you can still get the tax dollars.

Spending tax payers money to make money on tourists. Thats a great way for our state to go, we pay for the beaches to bring in tourists so they will pay taxes to raise the pay of officials. I believe everything south of the intercoastal water way should be nothing more than open parks and recreational areas, no stores, homes, condos, or anything to be paid for by the taxpayers.  Just open beautiful areas to enjoy nature and the beach. Dauphin Island should be the same way,,,,,

I agree with you somewhat BAREFOOTANGEL but I must admit I was impressed with what had been done to the Gulf Shores Beaches when I was there over Memorial Day.  Of course, in my 38 years I have never seen Gulf Shores Public Beach extending out so far from the seawall. My parents have had a place on the bay since before I was born and the beach changes almost seasonally.  I mean if it is a rough winter we may get several feet of sand added to our beach but then again a couple good hurricanes make take everything sand, peir, seawalls, boat launch, etc.  We just build back what we can and let nature do the rest.  I understand why they felt the need to do the renourishment program but I think now Mother Nature has shown them SHE IS IN CONTROL and nothing they do is going to stop her.  I say spend the money on healthcare, infrastructure of highways and our children and elderly.  JMO

Why keep spending money on sand? Let nature take it’s course.
