GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley has signed legislation
to build the Gulf State Park hotel and convention center on the
Alabama coast.
Riley signed legislation Tuesday at the site of the old park
hotel that was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
The bill allows the state to lease beachfront property for 70
years to a private company for development of the hotel. The state
would build and operate an adjoining convention center, in
conjunction with coastal towns that would benefit from convention
business.
Mayors from Orange Beach, Foley and Gulf Shores attended the
signing. Coastal officials had pushed for the development because
they said they were losing conventions to Destin, Fla., and Biloxi,
Miss.

According to another article that I read about the hotel, the rooms will be quite expensive and will definitely be out of reach of the vast majority of local Alabama citizens.  It is a good thing that there is a campground nearby that we can rent spaces at rates that are far less than a one night stay in a room will probably cost. This will be great for people on business accounts that don’t have to be concerned about a budget. Good Luck - I hope that the people that run the hotel and convention center make tons of money and that the whole thing doesn’t blow away too soon.  By the way, the pier will definitely be a great thing - if they don’t charge to go on it or fish from it.

Click on above to see photo’s of the NEW fishing pier.It is a real dandy. Can’t wait for June 1st to come.

Mrseed,

I stand corrected.————-It is 1200 ft long and 20ft wide.It is scheduled to open JUNE 1st.It will be the longest pier in the GULF area.

Mrseed,

The Fishing pier should be open as I type.It is a dandy. The new one is 800ft long and 20ft wide.I just hope they built it strong enough to withstand the next hurricane.Get them fishing poles ready.

just another attempt to keep joe alabama off the beach. it was supposed to be for all of us to use down there, nowo do you think will be there. we have convention centers in pcola, mobile, and biloxi that are loosing money and construction is at a standstill in orange beach and gulf shores and the economies are ready to implode there. what do you think this will do? and we already have the marriott in point clear for conventions and the like that Bonner has ruined for us. here comes the rest. why not redevelope like we did with the old hotel and let the average citizen enjoy a week at the beach instead of putting anpther high priced facility that will limit our access to land we pubicly own. you get what you pay, errr i mean vote for.

It’s been along time coming. Finally we get started on the NEW State Park Convention & Hotel. Most of us have fond memories of the old convention center & hotel that “IVAN” blew away. The Lawsuit that has held this project up,was in my mind just a sector of the population that wanted a “MOTEL 6” type of hotel. It’s all about money,if we want to attrack the best of the Conventions, you have to go 1st class.Nothing like sitting in the Restaurant of the hotel/Convention center looking out at the beach at Sunset. We all have Great memory’s of the dances that were held there also.Onward & Upward.

whats gonna happen to the pier?? will the state open it back up soon??
