MOBILE, Alabama - If you see a buoy or sign the next time you're on the water, odds are it's had a visit at Sector Mobile. Many buoys, signs and other aids to navigation are either serviced or built at this coast guard unit. In the next three years all buoys in the Gulf of Mexico and half the east coast will be serviced here. Officers here say they handle more than five thousand tons of navigations aids every year. They make sure traffic runs smoothly in the water. “If you could imagine, driving home today, during rush hour traffic without a single traffic light, without a single line painted on the street and without any type of road markings, what kind of chaos you would have,” says Senior Chief Barry White. White says they expect the volume of buoy restoration to slowly double. He says safe waterway transit is essential for global trade. You can learn more about all the different operations of Sector Mobile tonight at 6pm for our next Hometown Tour.
