You've got to hand it to bureaucrats in the Mobile area. They don't think small when it comes to boondoggles.
I believe it should be called "Mike Dow Syndrome," the belief that bigger is always better.
An interesting thing about this story is what it doesn't say: no mention of alternative plans. Perhaps that is what the meeting will address. Another thing is that mention of opposition is crouched in terms of preservationist or environmental objections. How about the economic terms: Could we solve the problem by spending less than a billion dollars? But then, government projects are seldom designed to make the most efficient use of taxpayer money. Instead, they are geared toward rewarding politically connected construction and engineering firms.
I suppose I can't fault the media for concentrating on the BILLION dollar bridge concept, since that is more headline grabbing than a boring story about plans for a by-pass. If I needed transportation to and from work, and I could spend someone else's money, then perhaps I would get an Aston-Martin instead of a Buick Skylark.
