I live in virginia and I was wondering if anyone knew any type of health insurance program or anything that I could get for my baby. Right now i've been paying for all of his bills out of my own pocket and I just can't do it anymore. I applied for medicaid, but they denied me. Please help.

Honestly, your post just breaks my heart. I can't imagine being in a situation where your child is ill and on top of that worry and stress you've got medical bills and no insurance.

I really don't have anything to offer since I suspect all state laws are different. However, I did find this about Virginia FAMIS, which evidently is low-cost children's medical insurance. Like Medicaid there are income requirements that may not be applicable to you, but if you're not already familiar with it it might be worth a call. And if you're not eligible, maybe they could guide you in some other directions.

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Whoever your Medicaid worker was there should be able to direct you to insurance options there. The pediatrician may also be of help, or a hospital social worker. In Alabama, we have a program called All Kids, that will cover children to the age of 18 or 19, that do not qualify for Medicaid. There are also private insurances that you can purchase for individuals or families-like Blue Cross, but I am not sure about the expense of those. Check with the people I listed above, they would be your best bet to get you on the right path there. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

PS-I know the Health Department here offers free to low cost checkups and vaccinations. Check with them also.

You do need health coverage, but you may also look into free clinics for well-baby care. I'm sure that would help. Most health departments offer vaccines, etc.

steavan,

I was re-reading your post-does your baby have any long-term or chronic health problems, or is it just the expense of normal baby care that you are having difficulty with? I hope you have had time to check out some of the suggestions posted. If the baby has chronic health problems, you may want to check with your local office of Children's Rehabilitative Services, or apply for disability for him/her. If not, I believe you can re-apply and/or appeal Medicaid. They should be able to furnish information as to why you did not qualify. I know people in construction may qualify one time, but not the next because of income.
