Bender Shipyard plans to displace higher paid labor force, Benders and their sub-contractors, with over 600 lower paid foreign workers from Mexico.  Channel 5 needs to investigate this immediately.  Layoff are already happening.  This work force change is not related to filling vacant positions, but is intended to displace a workforce at higher wages with a workforce at lower wages.  Rumor has it that Bender will supply this foreign workforce with lodging which would minimize economic advantage to the local community.  Just one more example of outsourcing American jobs.

Could it be workers could transfer to Mobile’s steel mill? 600 skilled from Mississippi going straight to Mobile with the experience could be great for the skilled workers and the mill. I hear everyday about thousands of applicants applying. In other words, It may not be as great of a loss as it seems since the area is in need of thousand of workers ASAP. The job market is in favor of the workers/job market today than say, a year ago. Just hoping and trying to keep it optimistic.

After 5 years of service my daughter was told she would be put on medical leave by Bender because of her not being able to keep down solid food, sudden weight loss and finally throwing up blood.  She went for tests on 3/31/08 and went back for followup on 4/8/08 to find out her insurance coverage had been cancelled on 3/31/08.  She received no notification of termination nor did she receive any information on Cobra.  Is this legal and if not what can we do.

Yes, it is illegal they have to by law within 30 days of being terminated give you info on cobra. If she was not terminated then they couldn’t cancel her insurance.  Labor Wage and Hour board but my suggestion would be a good lawyer.
