Will someone tell me how a public college can cancell classes for a black history day. Students were not given an option to attend. They had to turn in a report and have the program signed by a representative. At public institutions you should not be required to attend any assemblies unless you elect to attend.
Yes, I'm paying for my education. BSCC just decided to cancel all classes for the day so that students could attend the Black History day. Some classes rerquired a one page report, others wanted signed programs to confirm your attendance. Otherwise, you had to take a -0- for your class assignment. One of my teachers were very vocal about the college requiring that classes had to be cancelled. She, like I, felt that should have been a option to attend, not a requirement for a grade.

I am curious...exactly what does one attend at a black history day? If we are past segregation then why is there a "black" history course? Was it a seperate class? Was it a credited course? Who was it taught by? Is that person certified? Was it generalized or specialized? Will you recieve a certification of some sort? What type of "program" had to be signed? Was it pre-approved literture that has been certified by the Alabama Board of Education? Why would you have to take a "zero" for your intended class when you showed up to recieve and education in that particular course? (which, by the way, YOU ARE PAYING FOR) I am not sure how far you would get with it, but you may want to ask some questions and raise some concerns to someone. I applaud the teaching of history, regardless of what color it is labeled, but no individual should be forced to attend anything that they do not wish to attend...especially when an individual is paying for that right. If I buy a ticket to see a particular movie, then I should not be forced to see a different film. In fact, if I decide to simply stand in the lobby with my ticket, then that is also my right...after all, it is my ticket...I paid for it.
I am also a student at bishop.. I love that school, however I didnt think it was appropriate to make students attend the black history program... I had to be there anyway, but my teacher is requiring all of her students to write a paper on how the program affected my life.... I am like what the heck? I think I should have been given a choice to attend or not..... we shouldnt have to be made to attend any program regardless of the subject.... even if it was white history month I probably wouldnt want to go to that either...
Were you allowed to wear a rebel flag "t shirt " without loosing points? If not why not ? Remember freedom of speach, where is rev Jes and Al when you need them? Maybe the checks weren't big enough for them!
good point! It sucks because if you don't do it ... you will lose a grade.... andf or me..... if they tried to make all of the students attend a white history month... there would be an uproar..... dont get me wrong... I love it at Bishop.... but, I don't love being made to go to a program and writing a paper on how it is going to change my life... cuz truth is .. it wont...
