I'm not sure if you're referring to the commercial the Florida car dealer began broadcasting about a month ago that caused such a big hoopla and angered a lot of viewers on English-language television stations by airing commercials in Spanish with English subtitles. I generally don't watch commercials so there may be others that are being shown locally.

But it's obvious why it's being done. Profits are always the reason and certainly you can't fault a businessman for trying to drum up as much money as possible from his advertising dollars.

But I agree with you. Most Americans have a deep pride in our country and personally I think broadcasting foreign-language commercials while making the foreign-speaking viewers it targets happy angers those of us who still feel that people who live in the United States of America should show their repect for our country by learning to speak the language, which is English.

While the advertisers who do this are likely gaining a lot of foreign-speaking customers I'd wager the loss of English-speaking buyers who would take their business elsewhere simply because of the commercial wouldn't make it a good business decision.

This is a hard topic for me because in Texas I had a lot of bilingual friends, but I do know our ancestors weren't given this privilege. Do you have to know English to become a US citizen?
