I don’t think that enough is being done about getting people to abide by this law. When someone who is uninsured causes a wreck, they walk away with a citation. They may have to pay $100 and they are free (if they even show up for court.) While the people that they hit suffeer. You can try to file a suit against them, but good luck receiving your settlement. I feel that if you cannot obey this law (you probably don’t obey others also) there should be a much stiffer punishment. I know that other states don’t have a MLI law, but we do. The magority of people on the road have insurance and obey the laws, it is the few that don’t have insurance that make our rates go up.
What do others think about this?

Both drunk drivers that hit me did not have car insurance. I thought I was in trouble for a while too because we thought I had torn my ACL, while I was waiting on results I drove myself crazy wondering how I could pay for a $20k surgery. The car I was in at the time only covered $2k for passengers… thankfully I did not tear my ACL and I barely raked up $2k. But still, what about other people who get off worse than I did? Its really horrible and I HATE people who think that they can get away with this. People like that have come close to ruining my life and so many others and the fact that they feel they are that above the law not only reflects on their character, but it also makes them look incredibly ignorant, stupid and selfish. I have really really harsh feelings towards people who drive without insurance… really harsh feelings.
And yes, something really needs to be done about the punishments for these. The second guy that hit us tried to appeal his “no insurance” ticket… he really only had to go to jail to sober up and pay his ticket’s for having no insurance and doing a hit and run.

My daughter has been hit twice by people that did not have insurance and my insurance dropped us because of the claims. Talk about justice. One of the drivers was so drunk he had to be rushed to the hospital. This was his second time getting caught driving drunk and nothing happened the first time either.  Nether driver has spent any time in jail or court and has not paid a dime in fines to court or to us. This is just an example of how justice works in Alabama/Mobile. I get mad every time I hear something on TV about the tough drunk driving laws in Alabama. What ever!

The real problem is that we do have laws in place that are suppose to make it harder for these people to drive without insurance but they are not enforced.  When was the last time you had to get a new tag for a car?  They ask if you have insurance but they don’t require that you show proof.  The people at the DMV don’t ask to see proof of insurance before issuing a tag.  No tag? You should eventually get pulled over and cited for no tag and insurance and the fine is suppose to go up each time you are pulled over.  That would be a good under cover story for wkrg.  Send people to the DMV to apply for a tag and see how many are asked to actually show proof of insurance.  Also I would be interested to know how many folks envolved in accidents that did not have insurance also committed fraud when they applied for their tags and signed a legal document at DMV stating that they did have insurance.  Also never sign over your right to go after someone in court that has damaged you to your insurance company.  Often the one who hit you may have the same insurance company or the insurance company knows that they will have a hard time collecting from the individual so they have no intent in pursuing it. They already have your money!
Plus any deductable that you will have to pay to get your car fixed ‘if’ you have uninsured drivers coverage.
Remember your insurance company is in business to make money not lose it.  They aren’t going to spend a bunch more money to get you your $500.00 deductable back.

Ya know… just three weeks ago I went to get a tag for my truck. I was never asked if I had insurance. I assumed that I would need proof of it and brought my card in, but I never had to show it to anyone, no one asked me and I never signed anything saying that I did have insurance…

And they should ask for proof each time you renew your tag.
