The News Room and Police Scanners.

Hey David,

Not sure who to ask this of so I thought I would start with you and perhaps you can determine who best to forward this to.

For the past year I have known that the City of Mobile was going to change their radio system over to the County's system. They have been replacing the radios over that past few months and have just about got everything in place for the switch: I understand the switch is going to start in September and will be completed by the first of next year.

While I like the idea of the City and the County using the same system for several reasons, I do have a concern that I wish to explore. That is the use of encryption to keep folks like myself from monitoring police comms. It is my understanding that ALL police comms will be encrypted. Can this be verified by someone on your staff?

If indeed ALL police comms are to be encrypted how will this effect the newsroom? I know you monitor local law enforcement on your scanners, I have heard various references to it via your own radios. Yeah, I monitor those on occasion as well <Grin>. Has anyone there made arrangements to get a couple of the new radios with the the transmitting function locked out?

I also understand that the Sheriff's office will be doing the same thing as soon as they get all their radios swapped. So you might want to check there as well as to a time frame for that change.

I would also be interested to know if there are any plans to cover the story? I haven't seen or heard anything about this in any news outlet. I would think that this would make an interesting story considering the cost involved. These radios are NOT cheap nor are the new repeaters that have been put in place.

For those that don't know "Repeaters" are big transmitters that receive a signal from a small transmitter and re-transmit that signal using more power and great height to get the signal out farther.

Thanks David.

Wayne
WKRG HD DIRECTV

When will WKRG be offered in HD as part of DirecTV's local lineup. Channel 5 is the only network affilliate in Mobile that I cannot get a waiver from to get CBS in HD (I am in Thomasville and cannot get a strong enough digital signal to rcieve HD over the air). ABC, FOX and NBC affilliates all allow me to get the national HD DirecTV feed in addition to their Mobile/Pensacola standard feeds. When you go all digital in 2009, will your HD feed be available to DirecTV subscribers?

Thanks

I have problems receiving WKRG on High-Def channel 5-1. WKRG is the only station with which I am having problems. To watch CBS I tune to channel 5 instead of 5-1, so after Feb next year will I be able to receive WKRG? Will the current channel 5 go away and only 5-1 remain?

Drop them... <Grin>. Pun intended. <smile>

Really. They are a pain and annoyance. This latest one, does it every time I return to the home page. It's really annoying when I'm trying to go through the list of the news stories.

Wayne...

PS.

Just noticed this... After logging in, the drop down stopped. That's ok. But usually I don't log in when I visit: I just read the stories and take a look at the comments and the Forums. I don't log in unless I want to say something.

To the IT or Web Master at WKRG. I used to go to "another media" site for my online news. However, WKRG has certainly stepped up and provided up-to-date news coverage on its web site.

Congrats!

I have live in the Fairhope area for more than ten years and kept hearing news that count road 181 would be re-constructed to four lanes. The road is a major therofare between Spanish Fort and Highway 98 leading into Foley. Especially, at peek traffic hours, the road is really conjested. Also, it is a major road in an evacuation. Major home construction has taken place in the past few years and the road is becoming a critical support for the homeowners. The road has very deep drainage ditches on both sides in some places which is a hazard. Would WKRG be interested in researching why the construction has not taken place in such a long time. Thanks in Advance-- Bill

I am new to forums and am totally uneducated in the "Language".
Examples:
-I don't even know how to set my public profile!

-Thanks to Wayne225, I just learned what an avatar is!

But the search engine is what has me baffled! How do you find a post that was there earlier today and cannot be found by any of the words in the title? I searched all the forums, then searched individually! Nothing!

Any info on either of these topics will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Just wanted to let you know that I like the small changes that have been made to the home page. Please pass along my thanks to the proper people.

Lack of responce.

I have sent e-mail to two reporters asking about following up on stories covered by WKRG. In neither case have I received a response. Not even a "Thank you for your interest" note.

I must say that I am disappointed. One of the stories concerned animal abuse and generated a lot of traffic from the users here. The other was about the restaurant in Pensacola that burned; then it was discovered that the owner wasn't exactly who he said he was. I think there were/are a lot of folks that would love to see a follow up to that story.

Yet, to my enquiries at least, there has been nothing but dead air. I always thought "dead air" was a bad thing in radio and tv land?

I understand (sorta) why reporters and staff don't participate on the forums, but I must admit that I'm puzzled about not getting any responses to my e-mails. It would seem that we are being asked to participate here without any reciprocal participation of any kind. WKRG gets the rewards while we are seemingly ignored.

Perhaps it's time the staff of WKRG were allowed or perhaps encouraged, to answer their e-mail?

Avatar Problems

I am having a problem changing avatars. I have checked the file sizes of the various ones I would like to use as well as the size of the pics and they fall within the stated requirments. However they are not used by the system when they are uploaded. Since I don't get an error message I don't know whats wrong with them.

What's even stranger is that I have one pic that when I upload it, the system reverts back to a previous pic that I had used.

Can you take a look at the system and see if there are any internal error messages that would give me a clue as to what's wrong with the pics I would like to use?

Thanks...
