According to the Escambia County Florida Sheriff's Office website, 32-year old Christina Rivkin is facing a $500,000 bond after she is accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist while driving drunk.

Investigators say Rivkin was drunk when she swerved over and hit 25-year old Michael Steele who was bicycling on the side of Nine Mile Road near Pensacola.  Investigators say Steele's bicycle was dragged almost a quarter-mile underneath Rivkin's SUV.

According to authorities, Rivkin was arrested after she returned to the scene of the accident and almost hit a patrol car.  They say she was obviously so impaired she was arrested on the scene and transported to Escambia County Jail.  Rivkin refused a breathalizer test.

State Troopers say they did give Rivkin a blood test on the scene -- those results are expected in about six weeks.

Rivkin is facing several charges including vehicular homicide.

Yeah. If anyone has ever watched cops, they know that you can just as easily get a D.U.I on a regular bike as you can a car or truck. You can get it driving your lawn mower. Drinking pass the point of knowing what you are doing seems pointless to me anyway, but some people get a kick out of it.

So as long as you are not driving a 4 ton car, it’s OK to drink and drive? moonlightsrain hit it on the head-he is just as dangerous on a golf cart as a car-he could weave into traffic, causing someone else to swerve from hitting him, and cause a head-on with 2 innocent vehicles-then keep puttering along.

Couldn’t they setup a checkpoint at the 9th hole on any golf course and make a DUI fortune?

I know the point is that he was on a public thoroughfare, but I do see his crime a little differently than the regular DUI.

I will personaly give him so kudos for not getting in his dump truck, suv, or other half ton vehicle and endagering the life of others. FL law says that dui is operating any vehicle while under the influence. This includes mini bikes, bicycles, golf carts, electric barstools, and yes even lawn mowers. Let’s face it this guy still put himself in danger by driving the golf cart, and potentially anyone who colided with him I mean how would you have felt if you’d of run over the drunk guy in the golf cart because in his stupor he ran out in front of you?

If you’ve been drinking stay your *** at home. Get someone to go to the store for you or drive you… don’t get in your car. Chances are if you drank all the alcohol in your house… uyou’ve had enough anyway.

Why does a drunk who has been sucking down brew all day need to drive his golf cart or lawnmower? To get more beer.

STAY OFF THE ROADS IF YOU DRINK!

Over the weekend I saw this news report about this guy that decided to drive his golf cart to some place.  The first thing he told the officer that stopped him was that he had been drinking all day and knew better than to try and drive his car.  So, he took his golf cart down the road.  He was arrested for DUI.

What do people think about that?  Was there any possibility of him doing any harm to others while driving that cart?  In his drunken mind, didn’t he actually make a somewhat rational decision not to drive a car?

It is a very serious problem.  There are different types of drunk drivers too.  Some are just occasional drinkers that over do it at a party or something and then think they can drive home.  Then there are the hardcore drunks that repeat the behavior over and over again. Those types tend to be alcoholics and the only time they come close to making rational decisions is when they are sober.  To expect them to suddenly act responsibly is just a nice thought, but I don’t think it will become a reality any time soon.

I also did not think that you did not think that what happen to this young man was not a tragedy. It would take a pretty sick and twisted person to not think it was. I think that we all want the same outcome and want something to happen that will help lower the numbers of this crime. How this is going to happen, I do not know yet. We all have our different ideas and I just hope that something can happen soon for the safety of everyone.

but we should at least look at it harsher that it is today. I hope that one day someone is able to come up with the technology to at least curb this crime down. the only thing that I can do now is be fully alert when I am on the road with my family and try to stay off the roads, as much as possible, at later hours of the night.

I agree we need to be looking into who served her the alcohol, who, if anyone, saw her leave that intoxicated and so on. There is not much we can do to stop this from happening all together. No matter what laws we make there will always be someone there to break them. To BamaBob, you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I was referring to what you said about the drunks you knew being the most rationale people you know until they get a few drinks in them. I was not saying that this could ever be fully prevented. What I was trying to say is that if the person can not make a rationale decision after drinking, then they need to try and make that decision while sober. If you do not think you can make a good decision and not get behind the wheel after drinking then maybe you should not drink at all. If you are wanting to go out and drink and have a good time, than you need to bring someone that you know is not going to drink and is going to be there to monitor you. It is just the smart thing to do. Yes I do think that bartenders should check people that are leaving and make sure that they are not too intoxicated to drive or that they are having someone who is sober to drive for them. People are going to go out, drink and have a good time I get that, but it is the ones that are going out and endangering innocent people that are out on the road. I do not think that there will ever be a fool proof way to keep these people off the road…..
