Who would steal thousands of dollars from a collection plate at church? The crime has rattled even veteran police officers.
"I was totally surprised," says Capt. David Cox of the Milton Police Dept. "It happened at a church and it just makes us want to catch them more."
Investigators say someone stole five-thousand dollars from an offering after a recent Sunday Mass at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milton. The money was put into a bank bag then placed inside a cabinet. But when the clergy sat down to balance the books, the cash was gone.
"Our economic predictors that we're looking at now, every indication is that things are going to get worse before they get better," says Cox. "And that's going to be a stress-or that's going to make people do things they normally wouldn't do."
Cox says the crime could be an inside job because the thief knew exactly where the money was.
Detectives say church leaders are embarrassed about what happened but hope media coverage will flush out the crook who committed such a terrible crime.
Call the Milton Police Dept. if you have any information about the crime.
