NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a New Smyrna Beach
man was bitten by a shark while he was surfing.
Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn said
the shark bit the 20-year-old's left foot while he was towing his
surfboard Sunday afternoon.
Petersohn said the man's friends took him to a hospital for
treatment. The man, who had lacerations to his foot and instep,
also got treatment on the scene.

Mustuknow: It will hurt tourism some…but only the intelligent part. We will still have the same people going out into the water…surfing, swimming, playing marco polo with the sharks =)....they just don’t think it can happen to them. And it won’t really hurt tourism too much because as I said previously…there are alot of ignorant people in this world. So….while it is very sad…their deaths are also very preventable!

Sweetasuga04:  I am so glad you noticed and posted that comment.  I also read the stories in the sidebar and thought to myself “you must be a dumb a$$ to surf in this area.”  What I thought was amazing is that in one of the articles it touted the area as the “shark bite capital”  now maybe it is just me but I think that would hurt tourism tremendously.

This is actually a common sense thing. I have looked at the sidebar and saw at least two other seperate shark attack/bite reports on the same beach in New Smyrna. But…I bet you $10 next week, some other moron will think “Oh, no, not me it will never happen to me!” Venture out into the water & BLAM! Oops his leg is gone…or worse.

sharks live in the ocean. it is their home. i love to admire the ocean and the gulf or the river, but swimming no no. i only swim in pools. i sincerely hope the man recovers fully. what is the big deal about swimming or surfing in the ocean.
