TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet arebuying land around a key Naval Air Station in the Florida
Panhandle.
They approved a $5.1 million land purchase Tuesday of nearly
1,400 environmentally sensitive acres that will buffer Whiting
Field located just north of Milton. The land is bisected for Big
Coldwater Creek, a prime canoeing area.
The Navy is kicking in a quarter of the purchase price.
The land purchase also includes 622 acres on the western edge of
the property designated for a recreational area for off-highway
vehicles.
As part of the agreement, the state waived any right to sue
because of any noise, vibrations, dust or fumes from the military's
aircraft operations at Whiting Field, established in 1943.
