Foley Police Officer Maurice Wiley is on administrative leave. Foley Police officials say he was off duty when the officer shot a Century, Florida man in self defense. Authorities say the suspect, who is white, was hurling racial slurs at the officer, who is black, and approached him with a knife. The incident happened at 2:30 Saturday morning.

Amid the Sunday football ritual, the small crowd of regulars at Boomerzzz bar in Pensacola can't stop talking about the recent shooting.

“My jaw dropped, of course I wanted to know if it had to do with anyone we know, and it did involve one person who is a regular here,” says bartender Jen Coffey. She says Maurice Wiley's a good customer, known around here as “Reese” and she didn't even know he's a cop.

“He's a good guy, comes in, gets his drink he hangs out, always wants his popcorn,” says Coffey.
She says nothing like what happened Saturday morning's ever happened there before. Regulars say this all comes as a surprise because they consider Boomerzzz what they like to call a "family bar."

“Basically coming up for someone to talk to, friendship, interact with,” says regular customer Nancy Taylor.

primate…you immediately assumed the worst..read what you wrote…it is what it is. As for me thinking there are no bad or stupid cops as you say….that has nothing to do with this issue. First off, I never said that..not even hint to it. We all know there are bad apples in every barrell…from the top to the bottom. The Federal law superceds “most” state and local laws. As for him having the weapon in a bar…nothing wrong with that…But..if he were “DRUNK” “UNDER THE INFLUENCE ENOUGH TO IMPAIR” maybe someone could make an issue of it..not sure who..FBI / ATF maybe…he falls under Federal Statute / umbrella at that point. Intersting society we are…he rightfully defends his life and we debate if he should have been in possession of the very gun to do it with. Where should the blame be placed? My opinion is with the moron with the knife…regardless of anything else.

Thanks Primate.  Kind of a no brainer.

looks like this will be one for the lawyers to figure out. the l.e. was probably within his rights to carry his weapon. florida offers reciprocity to alabama on the ccw laws. he probably wasnt subject to the ccw being an l.e. anyway its way to complicatd for me to armchair quarterback form my living room over here. good luck to all.

Tide Fan, the safety act of 2004 was a good read.  thanks for posting it. It did say that “Peace officers who qualify under the new law must still obey local prohibitions or restrictions against the carrying of concealed weapons on (1) private property, if the owner imposes such prohibitions or restrictions, and (2) state or public property, such as a courthouse or a public park.”  What’s Florida’s law pertaining to carrying concealed weapons into a bar?

let me first say that i have very close friends and family on the police force in mobile. i would like to see this officer cleared too.. all the way around. but if you don’t think that there are bad/stoopid cops then it’s you thats naieve. it was only this past summer that there was a sherrif’s deputy, off duty drunk stopping people and writing tickets.it’s also common knowledge that we had a police chief not long ago that wrecked enough police cars drunk that they had to assign a driver for him. no sir i don’t assume anything.. thats why there’s a drug policy.not to find him guilty but to find him and the city that employs him, guiltless. noone is above the law or the scrutiny of it.

he might have gotten tested by his employer,or by pcola, we dont know. two prime examples of dont bring a knife to a gunfight. he is still entitiled to go to a bar on his off duty time, and to have a drink on occasion if he desires. if he breaks a law he is responsible just like us. the weapon in a bar probably doesn not apply to him. foley suspended him while they wait on the results of the pcola investigation. it all looks above board and proper to me. while WE cant ccw a gun in a bar the LE’s probably can.

You people are amazing…NOBODY EVER SAID THE COP WAS DRUNK…You assume WAY too much…even if he were drinking…thats not illegal. Primate, you have along way to go to educate yourself..you know absolutely nothing of his drinking / driving habits..yet you ASSUME the worst…sounds like typical anti law-enforcement feelings. The guy does what he can to avoid the confrontation by leaving…the idiot comes after him…follows him out of the bar with a knife..and the cop shoots him once..after identifying himself and telling him to drop the knife…Yet some here are committed to finding fault in his actions simply because he is a cop. If it were john-q…all the world would praise him. Nobody here comments on the wrongdoing with the guy and knife that started the whole thing…amazing thought process some here have. BTW…Read this.

clay..what part of “..
“He’s a good guy, comes in, gets his drink he hangs out, always wants his popcorn,” says Coffey. ” did you miss? ‘His drink’ doesn’t mean 40 nor does it mean just one before he left. thats why i asked about a blood test.as a police officer with a department that has a drug policy it’s mandatory testing after any incident. it’s simply to make sure there wasn’t anything to impair your decision making.  also depends on what he was drinking..beer,whiskey,151 proof rum,100proof vodka or 180 proof everclear? the alcoholic content of one can be twice the other’s.

they SAID he wasnt drinking. he just wanted his popcorn. must be a heck of a recipie for popcorn. soaked in jack daniels.  anyway glad no one was seriously hurt, most of all the L>E>, we are short enough in foley it would take forever to hire a replacement. i have stayed at that motel/hotel when i had business at correy or at the hospital and its not a bad place, pretty safe. mostly people doing business at NAS pcola who dont want to drive in the next morning. just because you GO to a bar doesnt mean you are dui when you leave.
