Pensacola Beach, Florida - Tropical Storm Ida may not have been a major storm, but it did cause its share of problems - especially in the Florida Panhandle. Several roadways were closed due to flooding or sand. One of those roads was J. Earle Bowden Way (officially State Rd. 399), the roadthat connects Navarre and Pensacola Beach. Now it's back open. Drivers should know that there is still some damage on the road, especially on the north side.
There are drop offs and damage points that are clearly marked by cones and traffic barrels. Bikers who use the area will also be disappointed. Those designated paths are still impassable. Officials with the Gulf Islands National Seashore feel the roadway is safe for vehicles. They plan to seek federal assistance to make the necessary repairs, and there may be future closings and delays on the roadway as those repairs are made.
Ft. Pickens Rd was also inundated with sand during the storm and the cleanup shuold begin in the next seven to ten days.
All the sand should be removed within a month or so. If you would like to get the most up-to-date information on these roads, there's an information line you can call: 1.850.934.2656.
